March 17: ONLINE WikiWednesday Salon NYC with Wikimedia Community Ireland for St Patrick's Day

March 17, 7pm: ONLINE WikiWednesday Salon NYC with Wikimedia Community Ireland for St Patrick's Day
Welcome to Wikimedia New York City!

You are invited to join the Wikimedia NYC community for our monthly "WikiWednesday" evening salon (7-8pm) and knowledge-sharing workshop. To join the meeting from your computer or smartphone, just visit this link. More information about how to connect is available on the meetup page.

We look forward to seeing local Wikimedians, but would also like to invite folks from the greater New York metropolitan area (and beyond!) who might not typically be able to join us in person!

As this WikiWednesday coincides with Saint Patrick's Day, we will have a guest speaker from Wikimedia Community Ireland, about Irish-language Misplaced Pages, the efforts of the community in Ireland, and personal work on historical biographies with a special Irish-New York connection.

This month will also include a discussion of Black WikiHistory Month in February and WikiWomen's History Month and Art+Feminism in March, and of course the great work that is being done in these topical areas throughout the year. If there's a project you'd like to share or a question you'd like answered, just let us know by adding it to the agenda or the talk page.

7:00pm - 8:00 pm online via Zoom (optional breakout rooms from 8:00-8:30)

GA Review

I see you passed HCR's GA nom. Don't forget to complete the checklist at the top of the review page. (Checklists are good; they help make sure you didn't overlook anything.)

Also, if you're into it, you can submit it and any other GA reviews you complete this month to Misplaced Pages:WikiProject Good articles/GAN Backlog Drives/March 2021 and get a barnstar.

Happy editing. – Reidgreg (talk) 20:24, 15 March 2021 (UTC)

Reidgreg, Hi. I think I hit everything on the checklist. Is there something you noticed that I missed? But I see I didn't actually update the cute little icons. I've gone back and done that. -- RoySmith (talk) 21:24, 15 March 2021 (UTC)
PS, I hope it wasn't too obvious that I shamelessly picked a submission above my own in the queue, to help mine get to the top faster :-) -- RoySmith (talk) 21:27, 15 March 2021 (UTC)
Oh, I see how this works. Tell the guy he gets a barnstar, then it turns out you need to do TWO reviews to get a barnstar. The cake is a lie! -- RoySmith (talk) 21:34, 15 March 2021 (UTC)
The Reviewer Barnstar
I saw your review at the GAN drive. It is a superlative review that goes above and beyond at offering helpful feedback and improving the article, while remaining focused on the GA criteria. Even more impressive, this is your first review! I hope you continue to do more GA reviewing, the process could certainly use more such reviews. Note, this is awarded purely in a personal capacity, it is not related to the drive. (t · c) buidhe 22:05, 15 March 2021 (UTC)

Tech News: 2021-11

Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.

Recent changes

Problems

Changes later this week

  • Recurrent item The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 16 March. It will be on non-Misplaced Pages wikis and some Wikipedias from 17 March. It will be on all wikis from 18 March (calendar).

Future changes

  • You can add a newline or carriage return character to a custom signature if you use a template. There is a proposal to not allow them in the future. This is because they can cause formatting problems.
  • You will be able to read but not edit 12 wikis for a short period of time on 23 March at 06:00 (UTC). This could take 30 minutes but will probably be much faster.
  • Advanced item You can use Quarry for SQL queries to the Wiki Replicas. Cross-database JOINS will no longer work from 23 March. There will be a new field to specify the database to connect to. If you think this affects you and you need help you can post on Phabricator or on Wikitech. PAWS and other ways to do SQL queries to the Wiki Replicas will be affected later.

Please help, about "Zhou Chengzhou"

Hi,

Dear RoySmith

Today, I found that the item about "Zhou Chengzhou"(https://en.wikipedia.org/Zhou_Chengzhou) has a clause to be deleted. I feel at a loss, so I added more reference sources for "Zhou Chengzhou" web pages, books and newspapers.

This deletion clause was proposed by AINH.

I respect the standards and terms of Misplaced Pages very much, and I always love Misplaced Pages and many thanks to helping us. If there is anything wrong with this clause, please give me some suggestions. I am very willing to accept the suggestions.

Best and have a good day. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Armidazhou (talkcontribs) 05:07, 19 March 2021 (UTC)

Tech News: 2021-12

Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.

Recent changes

Problems

  • You will be able to read but not edit twelve wikis for a short period of time on 23 March at 06:00 (UTC). This can also affect password changes, logging in to new wikis, global renames and changing or confirming emails. This could take 30 minutes but will probably be much faster.

Changes later this week

  • Recurrent item The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 23 March. It will be on non-Misplaced Pages wikis and some Wikipedias from 24 March. It will be on all wikis from 25 March (calendar).
  • Syntax highlighting colours will change to be easier to read. This will soon come to the first wikis.

Future changes

  • Flagged revisions will no longer have multiple tags like "tone" or "depth". It will also only have one tier. This was changed because very few wikis used these features and they make the tool difficult to maintain.
  • Advanced item Gadgets and user scripts can access variables about the current page in JavaScript. In 2015 this was moved from wg* to mw.config. wg* will soon no longer work.

GA review of Siwanoy

Thanks for your GA review of Siwanoy. I've incorporated many of your suggested changes and there is a standing request for an improved map on the article's talk page. Thanks. Rhythmnation2004 (talk) 13:13, 24 March 2021 (UTC)

Your GA nomination of Carlisle & Finch

Hi there, I'm pleased to inform you that I've begun reviewing the article Carlisle & Finch you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria. This process may take up to 7 days. Your GA nomination of Carlisle & Finch

The article Carlisle & Finch you nominated as a good article has been placed on hold . The article is close to meeting the good article criteria, but there are some minor changes or clarifications needing to be addressed. If these are fixed within 7 days, the article will pass; otherwise it may fail. See Talk:Carlisle & Finch for issues which need to be addressed. block help

Hi Im here to ask for your help please. Im a novice with wikipedia, but ive recently wanted to edit some pages and discovered im blocked and your name is on the special block list as the blocker, so i thought i might ask for your advice please. I dont understand why ive been blocked. I also dont understand how to appeal, express my innocence or be unblocked. I havent attempted to edit wikipedia for very many years so im a bit upset that i discover recently i cant. I even made a donation a few years ago so i find it all a bit ironic now. Anyway, i dont recall even attempting to edit any page on a show called 'britannica', but my memory is not great due to a neurological condition i have so any advice you can offer to help me make a fair contribution to an article id like to edit would be great. Many thanks Valentine 2A04:4A43:467F:3EC:503C:E260:1FEE:B68E (talk) 00:33, 26 March 2021 (UTC)

Can you tell me what page you were trying to edit, and the exact error message you got (copy-paste the full message). -- RoySmith (talk) 00:38, 26 March 2021 (UTC)

I actually get blocked from two things:

1) If i attempt to create a new account with wikipedia Or 2) I tried to edit the page on Eric Clapton (musician) approx one week ago by adding some details regarding the controversy attached to his name (the current entry is misleading regarding his present day position on the issue)

The error message says block ID #10364820 Evasion of block Related to Sockpuppet investigation by SethRuebens

Many thanks Valentine 2A04:4A43:467F:1B45:DE3:5070:F3CC:CE58 (talk) 23:52, 26 March 2021 (UTC)

OK, try creating an account now. I changed one of the block parameters so you should be able to do that now. If you're still having problems, let me know. -- RoySmith (talk) 23:59, 26 March 2021 (UTC)

Thanks Roy, I have successfully created a wiki account in the name of VeMangoTree.

I attempted to edit the page of Eric Clapton (musician). My intention was to address some of the controversy in his personal life which is currently on the page only in a very selective and outdated way, which does not accurately reflect his contemporary views on the issue which he has given in recent interviews. The current page gives the false impression he continues to hold the same controversial views that he did back in the 1970s when he was going through addiction problems.

When attempting to add new details (with reference to a radio interview from 2018) i received an error message: This page has been protected to prevent editing or other actions.

Any advice please?

Also, is there any feedback you can give regarding the previous autoblock that you just helped fix please? I mean, what did I do wrong please, and how can I ensure it doesn't happen again?

Many thanks V VeMangoTree (talk) 22:49, 27 March 2021 (UTC)

VeMangoTree, Hmm, we don't actually have a page called Eric Clapton (musician), but we do have just plain Eric Clapton, which as you have noticed, is protected so that new users can't edit it. This was done a number of years ago, in response to persistent disruption. The level of protection applied is what we call "semi-protection", which means you will automatically be authorized to edit it once your account is four days old and you've accumulated 10 edits.
However, since you say you want to work on a controversial aspect of his personal life, I strongly urge you to read our policies on Biographies of living persons. We have a page called The Teahouse which is set up to help new editors navigate our often confusing and complicated policies. While you're waiting for your four days to run, you might want to post there, explain what you want to write about, and get some friendly advice. -- RoySmith (talk) 23:53, 27 March 2021 (UTC)

Your GA nomination of Carlisle & Finch

The article Carlisle & Finch you nominated as a good article has passed ; see Talk:Carlisle & Finch for comments about the article. Well done! If the article has not already appeared on the main page as a "Did you know" item, or as a bold link under "In the News" or in the "On This Day" prose section, you can nominate it within the next seven days to appear in DYK. Bolded names with dates listed at the bottom of the "On This Day" column do not affect DYK eligibility. Requesting to change the protection level of A2Z (Philippine TV channel) and List of programs broadcast by A2Z (Philippine TV channel) to semi-protection

Hi, I would like to request to change to semi-protection of the page A2Z (Philippine TV channel) and List of programs broadcast by A2Z (Philippine TV channel) since you protected it. You protect the article because of the sockpuppetry of ASIANPOPCHANNEL, these 2 articles needs to be semi-protection because any sockpuppet accounts cant edit semi-protected articles until account is 4 days old and has made 10 edits. SeanJ 2007 (talk) 12:27, 27 March 2021 (UTC)

SeanJ 2007, Nope, sorry. This is long-term abuse and it's too easy to game autoconfirmed. Not to mention, for somebody who has been on wikipedia for 2 weeks, you have a surprisingly in-depth understanding of how things work. -- RoySmith (talk) 15:01, 27 March 2021 (UTC)
