The school is situated on Waterfoot Road. Newton Mearns is an affluent commuter suburb, and consequently the school achieves consistently high marks in school performance tables.
The head teacher is Mr Alan McGinlay who prides his school on its high standard of proper uniforms., however the Head Teacher's post is currently being advertised in TES. The school has recently received a new extension. The Media Studies Department is one of the best in the Scotland ,consistenly achieves high marks.
In 2006 the school again finished first in the school performance table.
Mearns Castle is situated next to Maxwell Mearns Church, which hosts the numerous services for all yeargroups throughout the year. It is also positioned next to Mearns Castle, hence the name, "Mearns Castle High School".
The School Captains for the 2006-2007 session are Alexander "Sandy" Thomson and Anna Kordeczka. Both these pupils belong to S6, presided over by Mrs Joan Herald, affectionately known among some pupils as "Auntie Joan".
The extension of the school is part of a Public Private Partnership Project with builders HBG. They employ their own janitorial staff and as such, there is a visible division between East Renfrewshire and HBG employees. Indeed, one of the East Renfrewshire janitors defected to the other side for better conditions.
Although located in an affluent area, many pupils travel to the school on a school bus. Due to the schools reputation, pupils come from as far from Cumbernauld and as such, several different routes operate out of the school's own bus station. Stagecoach Bus provide the majority of services for local pupils, using old double decker vehicles painted in a bright yellow to symbolise the classic "American School Bus." Private services for pupils living in the East Kilbride area used to be operated by Selvey's of Cambuslang, but this was recently changed to Campbell's of East Kilbride. A few years ago, a Selvey's coach was involved in an accident while carrying MCHS pupils, though fortunately none were hurt.
The school's modern languages department is quite large and is managed by Miss Ann Hastie. It teaches French, German and Spanish. In the case of Spanish, Mearns Castle gained its first permanent teacher in 6 months with the appointment of Mrs Lynne Stewart. Since 2003, there have been 7 different Spanish teachers at the school, much to the dismay of pupils.
Mearns Castle places emphasis on social responsibility and organises "Charities Week" during which entertaining events take place in order to raise money for a cause chosen by the pupils. The highlight of these is the lunchtime talent show, where pupils form bands or dancing groups and perform for others. The show, while mainly unrehearsed, displays a high degree of professionalism, not only from those performing but mainly the pupils and staff who contribute technically, through lighting, sound or backstage work.
