The Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Oblast was an autonomous oblast of the Soviet Union created in the Azerbaijan SSR in 1923. When the Soviet Union collapsed, it became part of the newly independent nation of Azerbaijan, but shortly thereafter unilaterally declared independence, though it remains wholly unrecognized. Currently it is known as Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh and is not recognized by any country to date.
