In Croydon, late 1999, he was ambushed by white-power extremists who, mistaking him for a local man by the name of Undogo Buemi, beat and hospitalized Phillips before being fended off by astonished locals. Surprisingly, he made a full recovery and was quoted in Liverpool based newspaper Militant as saying "I don't like it, we don't like it, and they certainly don't like it. But all that matters is my wife and kids to let the show roll on."
