Greenacre is a suburb, in south-western Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. It is located 14km south west of the Sydney central business district and is partly in the City of Bankstown, partly in the Municipality of Strathfield and partly in Auburn Council. The postcode for the suburb is 2160.

The suburb is distinctly but unofficially split into two sides, the north and the south. Greenacre north is serviced by the Chullora amenities, such as Chullora Market Place with the local sports team as the Chullora Wolves. Greenacre south is serviced by a strip of a variety of local independent stores and outlets.

Like many suburbs, Greenacre has an RSL and Bowls Club, located in Greenacre south.

Transport

As the suburb is not connected to a railway station, buses and cars are the mainway of getting around. The suburb is serviced by various bus and coach services that operate along the main roads and various smaller roads. Buses operate to and from Strathfield Station, Burwood Station and Bankstown Station.

History

This area was once known as East Bankstown. When the first road went through the area, an acre of land was cleared for cultivation. The contrast to its surrounding area led to it being referred to as the 'Green Acre'. In 1909, Greenacre Park Estate became one of the first subdivisions in the area.

Michael Ryan operated an inn called the Harp of Ould Erin on land he owned to the north of Liverpool Road.

Education

Greenacre is also the site of three public primary schools, Chullora Public School, Banksia Road Primary School, Greenacre Public School and various private, catholic and other religious schools. Greenacre Public School has one Year 5/6 Opportunity Class, made up of 15 Year 5 and 15 Year 6 Students.

A Local Korean Church educates religious practices, named Sydney Full Gospel Church.

Recreation

  • Greenacre has a library located in Greenacre south.
  • Greenacre Pools are also found in Greenacre south.

Geography

Greenacre has three major roads running through the suburb. The eastern edge of Greenacre is defined by Roberts Road, the northern limit is Liverpool Road and the main road, Waterloo Road.

Greenacre north is the site of Norfolk Reserve, which is bound by Chullora Marketplace and Norfolk Village.
