The book was a finalist for the American Library Association's Carnegie Medal for non-fiction in 2023 (won by Ed Yong's An Immense World). and the 2022 National Book Critics Circle Award for Criticism (won by Timothy Bewes's Free Indirect: The Novel in a Postfictional Age).
