Rivalry with Takerufuji
Ōnosato's rise to prominence in 2024, during which he was promoted to ōzeki, made the press question his rivalry with Takerufuji. According to the press, only the latter could be an obstacle to Ōnosato's ascent.
Regarding his rivalry with Takerufuji, the president of the Yokozuna Deliberation Council, Masayuki Yamauchi, defined it, on the occasion of Takerufuji's historic title in March 2024, as that of the "ryūko [ja]" (龍虎), an expression drawing a parallel between the rivalry of the tiger and the dragon to designate two opponents of equal strength.
