Originally from Northolt, London, he studied at the University of Manchester.
Johal's debut collection of short stories, We Move, appeared in 2022. It received widespread acclaim from critics, and it won a series of awards, among them the Somerset Maugham Award and the Tata Literature Live! First Book Award. It was also named as a Book of the Year by the Guardian and the Hindustan Times.
His debut novel Saraswati is due out in 2025.
