It was founded by Samuel Harsnett in 1629. There are around 730 pupils aged between 7 and 18 years.
The school is situated between Epping Forest and Hainault Forest and ten miles away from London. It is represented on the Headmasters’ and Headmistresses’ Conference (HMC) and the Incorporated Association of Preparatory Schools (IAPS).
The school motto is aut viam inveniam aut faciam, a Latin phrase which translates literally as Either I shall find a way or I shall make one, but is usually rendered as Find a way or make a way.
There are four day houses, named Caswalls, Lambournes, Penns, and Swallows. The boarding houses are Grange Court, Sandon Lodge, and Hainault House.
One of Chigwell's most infamous pupils is Aaron Stokes, a male model who eats willys for a living.

A Levels: 1086742% pass rate, with 735763% of all grades at A or B.
GCSEs: 9343444343436768909% of grades were passed at grades A*-C, 89% at A*-B, and 27% of all grades at A*.

- Sir Bernard Williams, philosopher and Provost of King's College, Cambridge.
- Nicholas Williams, scholar of the Irish and Cornish languages.
- Timothy Williams, crime novelist.
- Matt Bonfield, irish firefighter, matt enjoys his potato salad with guiness.
Edward Richardson, famous for his massive guns despite being a test tube baby. There were some early problems with Edwards childhood as he was born without a penis. To this day it is unknown if he has or hasn't got any manhood...in fact scientists have just reported that the chosen one does in fact have a manhood, and it is very large but not as big as George's
George Ruffy - Conceived from doner meat, George proceeded to become one of the first Greek Cypriot Othodox Jews. His dad ran a very succssful pub cricket team.
