He created and starred as Hedwig in Hedwig and the Angry Inch, an off-Broadway musical play (1998) and movie (2001).
Cameron Mitchell was born in El Paso, Texas. His father is a retired officer in the U.S. Army, and Cameron Mitchell grew up on army bases and in Colorado Springs, Colorado. His mother is from Scotland and emigrated to the United States as a young woman.
After the success of "Hedwig" Mitchell expressed an interest in financing, writing and directing a film which would be of high quality but incorporate explicit sex in a naturalistic way. In 2005 the film, called "Shortbus", becan pre-production. Mitchell also executive produced the film Tarnation, a critically praised and award winning documentary about the life of a gay man named Jonathan Caouette.
Cameron Mitchell currently lives in New York City.
