Robin Sage is a training exercise conducted at John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center at Fort Bragg, North Carolina for the US Green Berets. It is the last phase of the training 18 months of training that soldiers complete before they receive their Green Berets.
The course
During the unconventional warfare (UW) exercise, the Special Forces students are required to apply the exercise the skills taught in the Special Forces Qualification Course Officer and noncommissioned officer students are formed into Special Forces Operational Detachment-A teams and evaluated on their conduct of their mission in Pineland.
This exercise involves approximately 100 Special Forces students, 100 counter-insurgent personnel (OPFOR), 200 guerrilla personnel, 40 auxiliary personnel, and 50 cadre. The exercise is conducted in approximately 50,000 square miles of North Carolina and all participating personnel, except the auxiliary, are Active Military Duty. Students are isolated for 5 days and issued an operations order. They begin the intense planning process and study required to execute their detachment's mission during the exercise.
On day last day of isolation the detachment presents its plan to the battalion command and staff. This plan will explain how the commander intends to execute the mission. The next day, the students make an airborne infiltration into the country of Pineland. They then make contact with the guerrilla forces and begin Robin Sage. Students will then begin their task of training, advising, and assisting the guerrillas. The training will educate the guerrillas in various specialties, including weapons, communications, medical, and demolitions. The training is designed to enable the guerrillas to begin liberating their country from oppression.

Accidents
On 23 February 2002, during an off-post traffic stop, Moore County Deputy Randall Butler shot to death 1st Lieutenant Tomeny,31, and wounded Staff Sargent Phelps, 25, during the Robin Sage exercise. . The two army personal had presumed that Deputy Butler was aware of the Robin Sage training, and when stopped, attempted to bribe the Deputy with Pineland Money, which looks similar to Monopoly Money. The deputy used his entire inventory of chemical spray on 1st Lieutenant Tomeny, who was backpedaling, screaming and shaking his head at the time. Staff Sargent Phelps continued to think that the deputy was part of the exercise and grabbed the bag holding his machine gun and ran for cover. Deputy Butler proceeded to shoot 1st Lieutenant Tomeny once, turn, and shoot the fleeing SSG Phelps twice after telling him to show his hands. Prior to the accident, there was a belief within the military establishment that the law enforcement community of North Carolina was familiar with the exercise. Press releases are now issued before the exercise is commenced and law enforcement officers who participate in the training are now required to wear a distinctive uniform.
Pineland
For more than half a century, around a third of North Carolina has become the fictional "People's Republic of Pineland" for the 38-day exercise which cumulates with the 19-day Robin Sage. Pineland is located in the Alamance, Anson, Cabarrus, Chatham, Davidson, Guilford, Hoke, Montgomery, Moore, Randolph, Richmond, Rowan, Scotland, Stanly and Union counties of North Carolina.
