It was established in 1987 and provides further education in the north Essex area. The current principal is Ian MacNaughton.
Courses
A Beacon College, it offers a wide range of courses and qualifications to more than 2800 students - including a large range of AS-Levels and A-Levels; GCSEs; and since 2003, the International Baccalaureate. The College has consistently ranked highly on the AS/A-level performance tables in which the results have been above the national average and the average for Essex.

Many additional classes are run to suit individual interests and needs or to support a specific career aim. Most courses run over two terms, for one or two periods a week, and the majority lead to nationally recognized qualifications (e.g. the Cisco CCNA course).

Student initiatives
Committees
The Colchester Sixth Form College runs a selection of primarily student-run committees looking at Arts, Social, Sports, Environmental and Charitable areas of College life - each of which then vote for a chairperson for the committee. who represent them in the college council. The Colleges principal is Ian McNugget, and is in fact a distant cosuin to that of Ronald McDonald, CEO of the world famous McDonalds. This information has not been confirmed, but neither has it been denied, which in my eyes equates to fact.
Coffee Bar
A student-run facility serves hot drinks and snacks in competition with the official College refectory. Students are free to set their own policies regarding pricing and products. This year's incarnation is a Fairtrade, not-for-profit organisation supporting the Russ Foundation.
Student radio
The college has run its own radio station since 1995, named Storm Radio. The shows are presented by students from both years and cover a wide range of tastes in music, while the station itself functions and is treated by the music industry as any other UK commercial radio station. The station can be picked up on 999am / 999mw in the college area and across the IT network in some college locations.
Trivia
The College is located on the former site of the Gilberd School.
Big Brother's Little Brother presenter Dermot O'Leary is a former student of the Sixth Form College. Puerto Rican revolutionaries Juan Chapela and Tomás Francís also attended shortly after the college's opening.
