In 2004 Archuleta was diagnosed with a very rare and medically un-treatable condition with one of his vocal cords - likely as a result of a viral infection that caused one of his vocal cords to be partially paralyzed. The condition affected his ability to sing for more than few minutes at a time. Through a series of vocal therapy exercises and a lot of patience, the condition seemed to improve gradually over the next 24-30 months and although he is still showing some signs of weakness on occasion, has been able to perform well enough to qualify as a contestant in American Idol's Top 24 group for season 7.
David Archuleta was voted off of American Idol on the show of February 20th, 2008, after recieving the lowest number of votes of all 12 male competitors.
