Salonina Matidia was the daughter of Ulpia Marciana and beloved niece of the Emperor Trajan. Trajan had no children and treated her like his daughter. In 112, she received the title of Augusta.

In 119, Matidia died and the Emperor Hadrian delivered her funeral oration. Matidia was very fond of her second cousin and allowed him to marry his daughter Vibia Sabina.

Matidia first married Lucius Vibius Sabinus, a man of consular rank. He died in 97. Their daughters were:

  • Vibia Matidia or Matidia the Younger
  • Vibia Sabina, who married Hadrian

Her second husband was Rupilius Libo Frugi, who died in 101. Their daughters were:

  • Rupilia Libo, who married consul Marcus Annius Verus
  • Rupilia Faustina, who married Antoninus Pius
  • Rupilia Annia, who married Lucius Fundanius Lamia Aelianus

Through her daughters from her marriage, she became the mother-in-law to Emperor Antoninus Pius, grandmother to Emperor Marcus Aurelius and his wife, and great grandmother to Emperor Commodus.
