The New Orleans Riot of July 30 1866 took place in the streets of New Orleans. Nearly 200 African Americans were killed in that riot.
1860s events tied to killings in Louisiana
- January 26 1861 - An ordinance of secession passed.
- 1861 - The American Civil War began, creating great want across the entire State.
- May, 1862 - Union troops occupy New Orleans; military government established.
- 1863 - About 700 men garrisoned year-round at Fort Jackson.
- 1864 - A convention framed a new constitution emancipating the negro slaves immediately and unconditionally.
- 1865 - War ends. Carpetbaggers govern Louisiana.
- 1866 - A riot at Mechanics Institute (Tulane Hall); people slain.
- March 2 1867 - General Sheridan given control of Louisiana.
- 1868 - Negroes enfranchised amidst vehement opposition.
- 1868 - 14th Amendment ratified.
- July, 1868 - Military occupation ended.
