Daniel Ponce de León (Tarahumara Amerindian born July 27, 1980 in Ciudad Cuauhtémoc, Chihuahua, Mexico is a 5' 5" southpaw professional boxer in the junior featherweight (122 lb) division. He is a former WBO world junior featherweight champion. ("Ponce" is not a nickname, as a casual observer might believe; Ponce de León is Daniel's given surname.)
Professional career
Ponce de León's first loss was a unanimous decision loss to Celestino Caballero on February 17, 2005. Ponce de León won the vacant WBO junior featherweight title on October 29, 2005 defeating Sod Looknongyangtoy by unanimous decision, handing Looknongyangtoy his first career loss.
He has defended his title six times against Gerson Guerrero, Sod Looknongyangtoy again, Al Seeger, Gerry Peñalosa, Rey Bautista and Eduardo Escobedo.
The first round knockout wins over Looknongyangtoy in rematch and Bautista highlight Ponce de Léon's awesome power but his technical weaknesses were seen in his fights with Celestino Caballero and Gerry Peñalosa. In a brief statement after the Philippines vs Mexico world cup last August, Filipino boxing analyst, Ronnie Nathanielsz, stated that De Leon was not in peak condition when he fought Gerry Peñalosa.
Ponce de León retained his title against Eduardo Escobedo on December 8 2007 via unanimous decision, as part of the undercard of the Floyd Mayweather, Jr.-Ricky Hatton fight.
On June 7, 2008 Ponce de León was defeated by technical knockout in the first round by Juan Manuel López, losing his WBO junior featherweight title. Ponce de León was knocked down twice and sustained a cut on his left eye before the referee stopped the fight.
