Malachy Costello is a fictional character on the soap opera Fair City.
About Malachy
Malachy is the part-owner of the McCoys pub and is currently in a relationship with Sue. When he first arrived in Carrigstown, he was a priest. Malachy was attracted to Kay, causing him to leave the priesthood. They got married. Fr. Bertie warned Malachy to be careful, but he ignored him. Kay and Malachy fostered Lorcan Foley and helped him to turn away from a life of crime for a while. When Lorcan's mother Carol showed up, he was eventually drawn into the criminal underworld, resulting in his death years later. Everything seemed to be going smoothly for Malachy and Kay, but their first truama nearly caused them to split up. When Kay became pregnant, she was shocked to discover that her unborn child would be disabled. Convinced that bringing up a disabled child would be too stressful, Kay decided to have an abortion, despite Malachy's protests. After the abortion took place, Malachy refused to talk to Kay for a while, but he eventually realised the error of his ways and begged Kay to forgive him.
Kay forgave Malachy. Later on, Kay's nephew Stephen arrived in Carrigstown to escape the clutches of a cult. The leaders demanded that Kay and Malachy hand him over, but they refused. Stephen told the leaders to leave. Angered that Stephen betrayed them, the leaders dismissed him as an insignificant nothing and left McCoys. Stephen disappeared into obscurity and his current whereabouts are now unknown. When Kay's old boyfriend, Danny Fitzgerald, turned up, he manipulated a series of events in order to split Kay and Malachy up. Danny introduced Malachy to the world of gambling. Malachy found himself getting a buzz from gambling and soon his addiction threatened to destroy his marriage. Danny's plan to win back Kay seemed to be working, but he soon found himself on the run from an assassin. The assassin had been ordered by gangland leaders to kill Danny, as he had stolen money from them. He was wounded by a gun shot, but he managed to make it to a hospital. Malachy and Kay were in that hospital at the time. When Danny decided to leave the hospital, he was immediately assassinated, putting an end to his plans to destroy the marriage of Kay and Malachy.
Not learning from Danny's mistake, Malachy stole money from gangland leaders to fund his gambling addiction. This proved to be Malachy's undoing when the gangland leaders realised that their money was gone. Kay found out about Malachy's gambling addiction. The leaders had enough of Malachy and destroyed the McCoys pub as punishment for double-crossing them. Kay eventually forgave Malachy. McCoys was re-constructed and Marty Whelan did the grand opening of it. Kay and Malachy employed Stephen as a worker (he is another person named Stephen). As the months passed, Kay and Malachy found that they were bored with each other. Malachy found himself attracted to Sue and they had a passionate kiss. Kay, in turn, was attracted to a woman, making her a lesbian. Fr. Bertie's warning came back to haunt Malachy, as he realised that the priest was right all along.
In the aftermath of Lorcan's death, Kay and Malachy tried to reconcile, but it soon became apparent that they were drifting apart once again. When Kay found out that Malachy was attracted to Sue, she was furious, despite the fact that she was attracted to a lesbian. Malachy bid Kay farewell as she left for Spain. Sue and Malachy began kissing in public, much to the shock of the locals, despite the fact that the Kay and Malachy were unhappy in their marriage for some time. Sue's daughter Beth was shocked to find them kissing in her house, but she wished them happiness shortly afterwards.
