Derry or Londonderry is a city in Northern Ireland, near the border with the Republic of Ireland. It is Northern Ireland's second largest city. The name of the city is a subject of dispute between Catholics and Protestants -- Catholics call it Derry, and Protestants call it Londonderry (although some Protestants will call it Derry in casual conversation, they will mostly insist on calling it Londonderry during political discourse.) The city council is controlled by Catholics, which has officially renamed it Derry -- but many Protestants continue to call it Londonderry irregardless.

The city's original name was Derry, an anglicisation of its Irish name. During the settlement of English and Scottish settlers, the city was rebuilt using donations from the City of London, and was renamed Londonderry. The Catholics however refused to accept the change of name.
