After greek occupation of Aegean part of Macedonia in 1913, greek officials started with systematic ethnic cleansing against macedonians there, as well as other actions in order to decrease the number of "slavophonic" macedonians there.
After greek civil war 1945-1949 many macedonians were exiled in Republic of Macedonia, Bulgaria and all around the world (USA, Canada and Australia)
They were forced to leave their fatherland, their houses...
Greek government changed the toponyms and idioms in today`s North Greece with greeks ones, trying to exclude any thoughts of repatriation of the macedonian political refugees who now reside in Republic of Macedonia, US, Canada, Australia and other places in the world. In the greek public services and especially in the educational institutions the employees who are in service have orders to be ignorant of the local idiom in the sensitive region of Aegean Macedonia.
Even today Macedonians from Aegean part of Macedonia can not speak on their own macedonian language. Here is only one argument about this, written by Human Rights Watch
