What the Heck's an “Epopt”?

For a time I flippantly answered, “a test of a really good dictionary . . .”

epopt: A ‘beholder’; in Gr. Antiq. a person fully initiated into the Eleusinian mysteries. Also transf.
1696 TOLAND Christianity not Myst. 167 The right of seeing every thing, or being Epopts. 1798 W. TAYLOR in Monthly Mag. VI. 552 Those..who obtained the insight of these revelations, called themselves Epopts, Seers, or the Initiated. 1833 Brit. Mag. III. 48 That which has made us in some sort epopts of those mysteries which are between this world and the next. 1850 GROTE Greece II. lviii. (1862) V. 183 Addressing his companions as Mysts and Epopts.
Hence e'poptic a, of or pertaining to an epopt. epoptics n. pl., e'poptist = EPOPT.
1770 LANGHORNE Plutarch's Lives, Alexander (ed. Tegg) 467 Those more secret and profound branches of science, which they call acroamatic and epoptic. 1711 tr. Werenfel's Disc. Logom. 99 Aristotle's Books of deep Learning, his Acroamaticks, Esotericks, Epopticks, and mysterious Writings. a1652 J. SMITH Sel. Disc. i. 10 Hidden mysteries in divine truth..which cannot be discerned but only by divine Epoptists.

Alexander gained from not only moral and political knowledge, but was also instructed in those more secret and profound branches of science, which they call epoptic and acroamatic; and which they did not communicate to every common scholar. For when Alexander was in Asia, and received information that Aristotle had published some books, in which those points were discussed, he wrote to him a letter, on behalf of Philosophy, in which he blamed the course he had taken.

Alexander to Aristotle, prosperity.

You did wrong in publishing the acroamatic parts of science. In what shall we differ from others, if the sublimer knowledge, which we gained from you, be made common to all the world? For my part, I had rather excel the bulk of mankind in the superior parts of learning, than in the extent of power and dominion.

Farewell.

--Plutarch, in vit. Alex.

  • Me not on my way to Wikimania 2011. But wearing my official shirt! Pic by User:Eclecticology.

Been around for years. I do stuff. Mostly volunteering with WMF and WMUK on press things. I've been an administrator on this wiki since 2004. A wikien-l and wikimediaau-l listmod. Have read about diplomacy and can usually spell the word accurately.

My Wikimedia blog: https://davidgerard.co.uk/notes/

Oh, I have the keys to User:Querulous, but took the name just so everyone can freely use it as an example username.

You will need to decide for yourself whether I am an NSA shill.

I also edit RationalWiki, a small skeptical wiki. I'm also one of the sysadmins, though basically everyone gets the admin bit there. RationalWiki is apparently notable now, which is slightly disconcerting.

I have written and self-published a book on cryptocurrencies and blockchains, and a book on Facebook's Libra/Diem project. I'm on telly and in the papers a bit on the subject. The first book has been used as a college text. Unfortunately, this appears to have rendered me slightly notable.

How to make a martini for me

  • 1 shot vodka
  • 1 shot gin
  • 1 shot dry vermouth
  • shake with ice
  • two olives

Achieves the cocktail effect: where all the alcohol cancels out and it slips past your lips and mouth like a song, before burning all the way down your gullet.

  • There was once something to see here, but it disappeared ages ago, and I don't plan on seeing it come back.

Go ahead. Make my userpage. I'd love to have a userpage built by the Wiki Way instead of having to think of something myself because i am extremely lazy.

In other words, go ahead and edit this page. I will probably remove anything offensive, however.

Grunt could once often be found on ##linux on irc.freenode.net, but no longer.

Grunt is obviously a person of intelligence, owing to his use of Safari and Firefox as a tool to edit things on Misplaced Pages. He's also a non-Windows user, utilizing alternative operating systems such as Linux and Mac, automatically catapulting him head and shoulders above the unwashed masses. Grunt is so awesome, his mere presence on IRC was enough to disconnect people. Alphax  08:51, 9 March 2006 (UTC)

Grunt's an all-around cool guy. He is obviously addicted to userboxes, although the fact that he uses many varieties of Linux and the Mac OS more tham make up for that. That, and he's wicked funny on #tycoon! (Added by lws1984 at 5:09 AM UTC)

Grunt prefers to communicate aloud via guttural throat-noises rather than talking per se? Rumor has it Grunt was also an infantryman in Vietnam. This experience may have driven Grunt to Misplaced Pages. (Added by Vivacissamamente 16:32, 14 July 2006 (UTC))

Grunt has promised that in 2030 (if still alive), he/she will donate $250,000 to the Space Foundation to aid in the advancement of their research. (added by CrowzRSA 19:45, 17 June 2014 (UTC))

A very belated note - but I've just been digging through the history of WP:5P, and noticed you were the first to put it together, back in 2005. Looking back, it's a really useful thing to have had around all these years, and I wanted to thank you for having thought to assemble it! Clearly written and concisely phrased, and still useful. I have learned so much editing and writing for Misplaced Pages and had a lot of fun along the way, but I've had increasingly less time for Misplaced Pages over the last several years. Instead, I've been focusing my free time doing mapping for the Georgia State Defense Force (a volunteer part of the Georgia Department of Defense (GADOD)), and updating OpenStreetMap.org using GPS traces I create during hikes and mountain bike rides, which feeds back into the mapping. If I had time, I would also be editing Misplaced Pages at least about the parks I'm GPSing in and articles related to the GADOD. I still check my talk page and plan to come back someday, at least in short bursts for specific things. -- Daniel Mayer (aka mav) 17:10, 22 July 2014 (UTC)

Misplaced Pages:Requests for arbitration/Climate change dispute 2/Userboxen This user page has been vandalized 57 times (including once from WoW) as of 14 January 2010

Hello, I have been a Wikipedian since January 1, 2002 (as an anon) and I created an account named maveric149 (UID 62) the next day. After getting totally hooked on the idea of Misplaced Pages I became an Administrator and went a bit wikicrazy by racking-up an insane number of edits (most active non-bot-using contributor from early 2002 to early 2004). My focus slowly turned from quantity to quality (26 FAs) and along the way I ran for the first Wikimedia Board (Summer 2004), was appointed the volunteer CFO of the Foundation (July 2004 to August 2006), served as a founding member of the Arbitration Committee (January 2004 to September 2005) and became a Steward (April 2004 to February 2013).

My real name is Daniel Mayer and I was born and raised in California. In December 2001 I graduated with a bachelor's degree in biology and a minor in geology but I'm interested in a great many things. From my last year at university until the end of 2003 I was working for Caltrans part-time on transit planning, specifically transit-oriented development. During that period I was going to night school studying geographic information science (GIS). For most of 2004 I worked for the City of Sacramento, California on a GIS contract. In December 2004 I moved to Atlanta, Georgia. Soon afterward I was hired on another GIS contract but started my career in late 2005 when my client decided to hire me as a full-time employee (which led to a major decrease in my editing here). I tend to shy away from contributing on biology, GIS, or transport articles because that reminds me too much of work.

Taking GIS courses has totally hooked me on geography and helped feed interest in my long-time favorite subject geology by going on field studies (see my images section). I've also always had a fascination with the periodic table and its elements. So those three areas, geography, geology (esp of North America) and chemical elements (co-founded WikiProject Elements) are where I spend most of my FA-writing Wiki time nowadays. Attending Wikimania 2008 at the amazing Bibliotheca Alexandrina in Egypt has reinvigorated my wiki-spirit. I'm now trying to develop a good work-life-wiki balance. I'd like to spend more time on history, especially battles and English monarchs (maybe reestablish some Emsworth FAs). So far, the most I've done in that area is significantly expand about half the day of the year articles and set up the 'On this day...' section on the Main Page.

Barnstars

I dunno if I'm "offically" allowed to give these or not, but whatever the case... I hereby give you this shiny rotating barnstar and the equally-shiny Graphic Designer's Barnstar for your part in creating the way-cool Misplaced Pages logo :-) multima 01:54, 14 June 2006 (UTC)

I live in a small seaside town in England which now has its very own article! I came to Misplaced Pages via a link on wilwheaton.net.

My interests include embroidery, especially free style embroidery, and I'm learning stumpwork and Wessex stitchery. I'm interested in religion particularly in the Bahá'í Faith although I am not religious myself.

I'm also interested in keeping fish. My aquarium seems to be going quite well and now contains ten White Cloud Mountain Minnows, a Ancistrus called Fred, six Ghost Shrimp, five Cherry Barbs, five tiny Pygmy catfishes ,and one Platys.

I suffered from depression for more than four years, but now am well on the way to recovery thanks to the magic of lithium carbonate.

I can be contacted using Misplaced Pages e-mail, directly at sannse@gmail.com, or on my talk page. For questions relating to Fandom, please see my Fandom user page.

On Misplaced Pages

I joined Misplaced Pages in December 2002 was active almost daily until 2006. I was an admin from March 2003 until September 2012 and was a member of the Mediation Committee until the end of 2004. I was then on the Arbitration Committee until November 2005. I also answer email inquiries for the Wikimedia Foundation under the name Lisa Carter and am on the Foundation communications committee.

My usual activity on Misplaced Pages has been removing the links to disambiguation pages. I find this sort of tidying satisfying without being too much like hard work. I'm also involved in the dog breeds Wikiproject, mostly in adding tables and checking additions to the list of dog breeds. So far I have a list of over 500 breeds of dog, many not yet listed. I have worked extensively on the Grammy Award pages and we now have full listings by year and award title.

Photos

Ring-tailed Lemur
Ring-tailed Lemur
I'm very interested in contributing images to Misplaced Pages. I strongly believe that homegrown images are vastly better than "fair use" or "with permission" images. I would rather we had a moderately good image taken by a Wikipedian than a perfect image under a dubious "fair use" claim. My full view gallery is at User:Sannse/photos (full view).

My Yellow-rattle, Large White caterpillar and Ring-tailed Lemur images have been made featured pictures.

All my wildlife photos are identified using various books and websites. I've tried to be very careful, and have only uploaded images I am confident I have identified correctly (there are many others I have taken but am not sure enough about to upload). But I am an amateur and a beginner so please let me know if you feel I've made any identification mistakes.

Off Misplaced Pages

I now work as part of the community support team over at Fandom. One of the things I'm working on there is the Depression Wiki. Hopefully it will one day be a very useful resource for people suffering from depression. If you ever fancy a wander over to a non-Misplaced Pages wiki, you would be most welcome there!

Watchlists

In an attempt to make my watchlist manageable, I'm mostly using related changes instead. The sub-pages below are my new watchlists. That doesn't mean that if it's on this list I will be paying attention, I'm very behind on checking these.

Case summary

Briefly summarize case. No details.

Confirmation that all parties are aware of the request
(Provide diffs showing where parties other than the initiating parties have been informed about the request for arbitration.)

I move to reopen this case. In my opinion, User:William M. Connolley's revert parole has been imposed more out of a perceived sense of "fairness" ("Hey, it is a bad edit conflict - let's punish all!") than any real need. It does not serve any useful purpose, but instead is used by some users (in particular User:SEWilco, who has a long history of conflict with WMC) to stalk WMC and to claim "violations" even on uncontroversial and trivial edits (e.g. Kyoto protocol). See the dicussions on the Administrators Noticeboard. Let me also point out that 6 month is a very long time nowadays - I've seen people go from newbie to admin in less than 6 month, and I have seen admins being considered for bueraucrats after 5 month as admin. As far as I can tell, few of these people have contributed nearly as much as WMC.

Yes, I know this is against procedure. Yes, I know this might make me part of the case. Let it be so. --Stephan Schulz 10:15, 20 November 2005 (UTC)

Statement by El_C

I would like to second this appeal to lift William M. Connolley's parole. El_C 12:04, 20 November 2005 (UTC)

  1. I think SEWilco should have sought clarification from the Committee to begin with on whether to pursue infractions retroactively, not to mention the how (though keeping an account of these in his userspace seems sensible enough). Because he did not do this, a number of editors (including himself) ended up wasting valuable time and energy that could have otherwise been spent productively elsewhere. Moreoever, his explanations seem to blur the fine-enough line between acting proactively and retroactively, which I also find unfortunate.
  2. Also, I do not believe the conditions of WMC's parole serve any useful purpose to Misplaced Pages, in terms of a potential disruption of it by himself. And in that sense, then, they now (I'll avoid the argument of what was or was not in the past) in-practice serve as punitive measures, which I am confident no one here, including SEWilco, feels is a correct way to approach dispute resolution on Misplaced Pages. There are some additional people involved, particularly those affected by the remedies and those involved in implementing and enforcing the remedies.

Response to William M. Connolley

So you'd rather attack me personally than figure out why your parole was not being enforced? The process has to be wide enough to include the people who did not enforce your parole, as for some reason my aid in enforcing the ArbComm decision is being questioned. I'd like to see SEW's recent behaviour examined: he has been malicious. I would also like my parole clarified (well actually I'd like it revoked). SEW's attempt to make the process so wide as to be unmanageable is absurd, and rather typical of his behaviour. William M. Connolley 22:10, 22 November 2005 (UTC).
