The Wedding Singer is a romantic comedy film directed by Frank Coraci starring Adam Sandler as a wedding singer, and Drew Barrymore as the object of his affections. Robbie's backup singer, George (played by Alexis Arquette), is a parody of Boy George.
Set in 1985, the film prominently features New Wave style music, as well as varied others from that era; although some have criticized the movie for feeling more like 1983 or 1984 because most of the songs and fashions in the movie were starting to date themselves in the real 1985.
The Wedding Singer will be adapted into a Broadway musical, to premiere in Spring 2006. The lead character will be played by comedic songwriter Stephen Lynch.
In 2000, readers of Total Film magazine voted The Wedding Singer the 43rd greatest comedy film of all time.
The film's two stars would re-team in the 2004 romantic comedy 50 First Dates.
