Misplaced Pages:Featured picture candidates/The Trinity nuclear test, 1945
- Cheers. And well done yourself on finding that bigger version and getting it up there. It did amazingly well. --jjron (talk) 09:09, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
Historic images
Thanks for uploading some interesting historic images! If you haven't already, I suggest you check out Wikimedia Commons. For free licensed images (such as old public domain/US government images, etc) you can upload them directly there. Why? They will then be availible not only here on the English language Misplaced Pages, but also for Wikipedias in other languages, other Wikimedia projects, etc-- and putting them into any article here on the English language Misplaced Pages is still just as easy; do exactly the same as if it was uploaded here. Commons also has categories and galleries, allowing useful images to be found in multiple ways. Check it out, and let me know if I can be of help. Cheers, -- Infrogmation (talk) 06:22, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
- I agree! It saves a lot of effort having to reload them! Philly jawn (talk) 16:43, 25 February 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks, guys. I'm now uploading all new PD images to Commons -- Pete Tillman (talk) 20:26, 9 March 2009 (UTC)
Trinity and Brixner
I just called up his daughter and asked her for information. I did that for about a dozen people so far. Its a lot easier than combing though archives to get a day and place of birth. Once you have the info its easier to confirm with a Google search, no one has refused to talk yet. I can't even get my own family members to cooperate on family history, so its nice when others do it. Have you ever cold called someone? --Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) (talk) 17:27, 11 July 2008 (UTC)

Planchas de Plata (etc)
Thanks for your additions to the mining articles. I have never been to Planchas de Plata myself. A friend and I made a half-hearted stab at it years ago, but we could not find our way over the dirt roads from Nogales. It would be fun to see it. Plazak (talk) 21:10, 29 July 2008 (UTC)
POTD notification
Hi Pete,
Just to let you know that the Featured Picture Image:Trinity explosion2.jpeg is due to make an appearance as Picture of the Day on November 26, 2008. If you get a chance, you can check and improve the caption at Template:POTD/2008-11-26. howcheng {chat} 06:16, 24 November 2008 (UTC)
Great image uploading
Thanks for putting the new image in George Harrison. I had a look at what else you have done, and see that you have been responsible for tracking down and uploading some fine images. I would second the comment above that many of the images you upload would be useful at Commons, and that it would be helpful to upload new images there, and to seriously consider moving some of your existing 'pedia images over there. Though on Commons the images must be free use - usable by everyone, so more care needs to be exercised on what is allowable. Anyway - keep up the good work!
I've given you a Wiki award which you may display on your user page! SilkTork * 14:22, 23 December 2008 (UTC)

Rollback
Hi, I've given you rollback. Remember only to use it for blatant vandalism, and revert manually when the edit is in good faith. You can test it out here. I also suggest you warn vandals with vandal warning templates. If you have any questions, please ask. Cheers, bibliomaniac15 02:20, 9 March 2009 (UTC)
welcome to NRHP!
Hey, glad to see you joined up at wp:NRHP. Welcome, from a fellow member. Please feel free to post any questions or comments at the talk page, shortcut wt:NRHP. Also, please feel free to post any new articles that you create, at the New Articles box on the main page, just add your new article name there. That tends to attract some helpful others' attention. Unfortunately i am not local to Yavapai, but i visited there with the Don Quixotic purpose of capturing all of its NRHP sites for wikipedia listing with pics. It turns out Yavapai has too many, too widely scattered sites for me to get to all of them. I actually wandered around in a fog one morning early at the top of Mingus mountain, and could not find the lookout towers. Also i trekked far into Agua Caliente or something like that, to find a solitary Ranger station. Fun, and got it, but cost half a day, and almost lost my car in a puddle. You need a jeep to get to some of these Ranger stations, lookouts, and bridges! And then i didn't post my pics and start articles right away, so i am further afraid i will not be able to match up my pics to the correct NRHP sites. Please feel free to start up any new articles out of redlinks the National Register of Historic Places listings in Yavapai County, Arizona list article. If you would please make any edit at the list-article, like beginning a description, then I will notice it off my watchlist and know to come visit the new article. There are useful tools like an NRHP infobox generator which I can tell you about later. Really glad you are on board! Cheers, doncram (talk) 00:23, 21 March 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks, and thanks for the mini-archive thingie! Cheers, Pete Tillman (talk) 02:25, 22 March 2009 (UTC)
Yavapai County
Thanks for the new pictures! Since it's finally clear to everyone (admitting the possibility that it was clear to everyone else a good while ago) that it's only Black Canyon City, a few questions: (1) Any idea if the boundary increase simply included a location change? I think this happens sometimes.
- I think it was just an expansion -- there are archaeol, sites on the Forest Service lands adjacent, and some of the BLM land that wasn't included in AFNM
(2) Did you get any pictures when you were out there?
- Sorry, no -- I'm not much of a photographer :-[
(3) Since you say that the book includes a description, could you post somewhat of the description, referencing the book? We don't always leave "Address Restricted" as restricted, if we have a reliable source for the information, although it's good to note in the citation that the NRIS lists it as restricted. Thanks! Nyttend (talk) 12:01, 30 March 2009 (UTC)
- Sure. Actually, I've been thinking I should start the Perry Mesa Archaeoligical District article, and that would be a logical place. Do you have an URL for the NRHP declarations for there? Best, Pete Tillman (talk) 18:51, 30 March 2009 (UTC)
Hopi mural
I like the Hopi mural pic you added to Misplaced Pages:WikiProject National Register of Historic Places/Editor help. And glad there's a suggestion therefore that someone reads there....
Just a note/question: it's a pic of an artwork, and as such i am not sure about its copyright for use in wikipedia. The photograph, which the description says is a photo by a Fed employee, is not itself copyrighted. But art works are different, there are much tougher rules about these. In general you cannot take pics of any modern art sculptures, even in public places, and upload them to wikipedia. I did just recently participate in wp:Misplaced Pages Loves Art, an event in cooperation with museums in which people went and took pics of old art in museums that is public domain, but i thought the cutoff was 1927 or older, or something like that. I am not going to go out of my way about this one, further complicated by the fact it is Federal pic, but perhaps you should look into the art copyright stuff, as someone else may bring it up. Really neat mural, actually, and Mary Jane Colter sure did good work with the series of compatible structures along the South Rim. doncram (talk) 18:35, 10 April 2009 (UTC)
- Heh. I just got into this over at Talk:Rhyolite, Nevada re Commons:Freedom of panorama -- you're right, it's messy. Kabootie was a sort-of Federal employee then, and it is an official NPS photo. Still, maybe not the best choice for an example... Maybe substitute File:Lace House.jpg, from HABS?? Assuming it's NRHP-listed, can't imagine not. Great building. Haven't been back there since the casinos came in. They kinda made a mess at Cripple Creek. Cheers, Pete Tillman (talk) 18:53, 10 April 2009 (UTC)
- Oh, okay, yes it's about panoramas and all that. Just browsed the wikipedia loves art stuff, they're announcing winners in some areas but not the one i participated in yet. It seems the cutoff for most purposes in that event was 1927. I like the Lace House pic though, neat looking. As you must know, anything in HABS is public domain, the HABS project was specifically set up that way, unlike some other NPS website photos which may in fact be copyrighted. Nice job in fully describing that HABS pic in your upload. I've seen others where photographer and date are not credited, even though available somewhere. User:KudzuVine has done a lot of good uploading of HABS pics too, many showing in List of NHLs in SC for example. doncram (talk) 19:18, 10 April 2009 (UTC)
- Lace House is probably in the Central City-Black Hawk Historic District, but rather than find out for sure, I'll plug in this nice HAER photo: File:CoolidgeDam.jpg. --Pete Tillman (talk) 20:36, 10 April 2009 (UTC)
ZCTA
Thanks for adding the ZCTA populations! Just one note — the official name is "ZIP Code Tabulation Area", not "Zip Code Tabulation Area". Also, could you add sources for the ZIP codes for the communities? If my request isn't clear, look at what I did to Arivaca. Nyttend (talk) 14:42, 20 April 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks. Do you really think we need to cite ZIP codes? That seems a bit like citing county or state locations. Best, Pete Tillman (talk) 14:48, 20 April 2009 (UTC)
- Didn't see your reply until now on this...yes, just like anything else. We cite county/state with GNIS or Census Bureau information, and when we're dealing with ZCTAs, it's more important, because the Census Bureau data doesn't tell you what ZIP code goes with what community. Nyttend (talk) 11:24, 8 May 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks for the explanation. Yes, it is a bit of a slog figuring out what area a ZCTA really covers. --Pete Tillman (talk) 16:36, 8 May 2009 (UTC)

List of Native American artists
Would you consider looking at this list? I'm trying to purge the less notable artists and don't know quite as much about who's who in ceramics as I would like to. Thanks for any edits or suggestions! Cheers, Uyvsdi (talk) 00:22, 17 November 2009 (UTC)Uyvsdi
- I'll be happy to, though any substantial work will probably have to wait until I get back to Arizona, where the bulk of my art library is.
- I also see many prominent artists who still need wikibios, and will work on some of those as time permits.
- Thanks for your continuing work on this project. I've been working on other things, so this is a good spur to do some more work on Native American art. Best regards, Pete Tillman (talk) 04:49, 17 November 2009 (UTC)
- No hurry. Thank so much for adding information about Michael Kabotie. Cheers, -Uyvsdi (talk) 17:44, 17 November 2009 (UTC)Uyvsdi
Art images
Wow, kudos to you for all the images added! I confess that I haven't really figured out WikiCommons - it's not as user-friendly as Misplaced Pages proper. I know low-rez images of art can be used as non-free fair use images, but haven't quite figured out the rules, so I stick to photos I've taken of public art or art in museums that allow photography. Michael Kabotie's passing is just shocking, since he was so active beforehand. Now that I think about it, there's a John Hoover sculpture that I have access too. Have a good evening! -Uyvsdi (talk) 07:31, 18 November 2009 (UTC)Uyvsdi
- Regarding the Annie Antone image, as long as the image is low-rez (i.e. no one could replicate her design based on a photograph), I believe it would be regarded as your photograph of a 3-D art form. I'd suggest uploading the file at Wikimedia Commons. The photograph would be "entirely your own work." For permission you could put it into public domain by typing in: "{ { pd-self } }" (without the spaces). For anything before 1923, I enter "{ { pd-old } }" (also without the spaces) for the permission. Hope this helps! The Heard would be a good spot to photo more artists. Cheers, Uyvsdi (talk) 17:32, 18 November 2009 (UTC)Uyvsdi
- Thanks for the tips. Too bad I'm such a rotten photographer. Usually, if I don't forget the camera entirely, the batteries have gone dead.
- Lo-res, eh? Well, I could use the phone-cam! Too bad I have absolutely no clue as to how to export fotos from the phone....
- Hmm. Actually, this computer has a webcam, which actually is (sort of) easy to use. I could try that for in-house art fotos. Hmm --Pete Tillman (talk) 18:01, 18 November 2009 (UTC)
Harrison Begay
Nice job! I encourage you to do more. Still quite a few redlinks on that page. Even initiating a stub is productive. I urge caution in linking to commercial pages explicitly selling items. Amerindianarts (talk) 06:47, 19 November 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks! It's surprising how many first-rate artists don't yet have Wikipages. OTOH, it takes a lot of work to put together a decent one (as I just rediscovered). Good projects for bad-weather days.
- I'll only link to commercial galleries when I can't find a decent noncommercial one -- and then only to low-pressure ones. But I take your point. Best, Pete Tillman (talk) 18:43, 19 November 2009 (UTC)
Name change support
Hi Pete,
I just re-read the material for renaming the CRU incident page and saw you've changed your Opposed (now stricken) to Support (not listed). You might want to make sure it's listed under the support heading? Troed (talk) 11:33, 29 December 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks, but I think I'll let it stand as is -- the new title would be an improvement, but not much of one, in my view. Cheers, Pete Tillman (talk) 18:19, 29 December 2009 (UTC)
Re: MWP as warm as CWP
- Erm? Sorry Pete, but that the MWP globally (or just the Northern Hemisphere) should have been warmer than the last part of the 20th century, is supported by no hemispheric og global temperature reconstruction. I will repeat that: None, Zip, Zero. (not even the Loehle reconstruction after he corrected it for errors) - So who are the people who (once again) think that the MWP was as warm as the CWP?
- When you are referring to Briffa, do you have a recent comment? Or are you just picking up on a comment from a 1999 email? I hope you aren't, since as you should know that a lot of water has run under the bridge since that time, and that more and more reconstructions (and papers) have shown the opposite. (including Briffa's own papers). --Kim D. Petersen (talk) 22:33, 30 December 2009 (UTC)
- Hi, Kim & thanks for the note.
- FWIW, my take on the matter, as an informed outsider, is that the proxy data aren't good enough to tell. IMO, the error bands on the published work I've looked at in detail are understated, sometimes grossly so. The level of statistical expertise demonstrated in climate science is generally pretty dismal, imo -- and I'm pretty knowledgeable about these sort of statistics, both from training and from experience.
- There is a fair bit of empirical evidence that the MWP was somewhat warmer than CWP: treelines, crop plantings, Greenland colonies etc etc. So your categorical statement above just isn't true.
- There's the additional problem that we don't (imo) currently have a good historical climate record, after all the mysterious manipulations and "value added" by CRU, GISS, and others. The best evidence of this I've seen is the satellite record: See, forex, Douglass & Christy 2009, Fig 1. . I think you'll find this a provocative (& short) paper. This graph supports my strong impression that the current versions of the historical temp record are biassed warm, for the past 3 or 4 decades, and suspect elsewhen.
- I agree, a bit OT at S&B contro, but interesting, no? Best for 2010, Pete Tillman (talk) 19:12, 31 December 2009 (UTC)
- Pete, best for 2010 as well :) But now for the more serious part...
- Note that i said "hemispheric or global reconstruction", those are the synthesis of the proxy records, not individual records. When you look at individual proxy records, they will often show a clear and distinct MWP and LIA, but when you combine the view with other proxies, then the picture changes: The LIA is still distinct, but the MWP gets "fuzzy"... This happens because the while individual records may have a period around 800-1200 years ago that was warm/cold/wet/dry - they often do not match other proxy records temporally, and thus the synthesis period for the hemisphere/globe doesn't show the same distinct signal. For instance Fenno-Scandia was probably warmer than Fenno-Scandia is today - but other regions were not. (ie. the statistics do not show the same signal as individual records).
- Without going into detail on the temp-record, i will point out that the temp-record that has the most value-adding and which changes the most between corrections is the Sat-record, making the reliability of that record rather suspect. This is the reason that the NAS committee at the time considered that the disparacy in the tropical record between surface records and satellite most likely is a problem with the sat-record. --Kim D. Petersen (talk) 02:08, 2 January 2010 (UTC)
