Saddam or Sadam (Arabic صدام) is an Arabic name which literally means "One who confronts". Other possible meanings include:

  • "One who frequently causes collisions"
  • "Powerful collider"
  • "One who frequently confronts"
  • "One who causes a collision that had bad results"
  • "Powerful confronter"
  • "One who frequently crashes"
  • "Powerful commander"
  • "A young boy who shines shoes" (with the accent on the first 'a')

The best known bearer of the name was Saddam Hussein (1937-2006), former state president and prime minister of Iraq. The name has risen in popularity in some Muslim populations after the War in Iraq and the former prime minister's execution.
