Timiş (Romanian: Timiş, Hungarian: Temes, Serbian: Tamiš/Тамиш) is a county (judeţ) in Western Romania, in Western Transylvania - Banat region, with the capital city at Timişoara (population: 305,977 as of 2004).
The name of the county comes from the river Timiş, known in Roman Antiquity as river Tibisis or Tibiscus.

The county's population is diverse and is made up from Romanians - 83 %, Hungarians - 7.5%, Germans - 2%, Serbs - 2%, Rromas (Gypsies) - 2%, Bulgarians and Ukrainians under 1%.
Geography
This county has a total area of 8,697 km² (3,6% of Romania). It is the largest county in Romania.
In the Eastern extremity are the Poiana Ruscăi Mountains from the Southern Carpathians group. The heigths decrease to the west, passing through the Lipova Hills ti the Western Romanian Plain, the Eastern part of the Pannonian Plain.
The county is crossed by many rivers, the most important being the Bega River and the Timiş River.
