In Answer To Your Question

I've split off that page for you. What you'll need to do is create a page entitled John Coghlan (drummer) (just click that red link and start the page). If you need help let me know. Happy editing! --Pilot|guy 22:26, 4 June 2006 (UTC)

Monty Python

I recently created this page: List of things referred to in the works of Monty Python and have a few questions about it:

  • I think a table format with 3 columns might be easier to read but I need it to be as simple as possible for people to add their contributions to it, and I think a table is more fiddly than bullet points, right? Any thoughts?

A: Try it on a sandbox and ask for comments. Xiner (talk, email) 01:27, 17 February 2007 (UTC)

  • It would be nice if, whatever I chose, it automatically sorted itself A-Z by the first column. Can Misplaced Pages do that?

A: No, I'd also assert notability somehow b/c I've a feeling someone's gonna list this for deletion. Xiner (talk, email) 01:26, 17 February 2007 (UTC)

  • I would like to cross reference the articles that appear in the list with an infobox with coloured shading and maybe the foot-in-the-television image you see at the top of the table that appears at the bottom of Monty Python. It would appear along the bottom of each article, centred or left/right margin - and it would simply say "The subject of this article is mentioned in the works on Monty Python" with a clickable link back to my list page. But I don't know how to code such an infobox and don't you need new infoboxes such as this to be approved before use?
Use the template of that box that is at the bottom of the Monty Python article (can be found at Template:Monty_Python) and sort of redo it in the Sandbox and make it with the requirements you would like, then suggest it to the Template_talk:Monty_Python page where you can ask for suggestions and comments. Extranet 03:54, 17 February 2007 (UTC)
  • I am obviously keen to encourage others to add lines to this list. How do you suggest I do this within (and outside of) Misplaced Pages?
Recommend it on Talk:Monty Python under a new heading. You could possibly also ask for comments and suggestions on the new template there as well. Need any further help? Simply ask another question and add the {{helpme}} tag at the top. Extranet 03:54, 17 February 2007 (UTC)

{{helpme}}

Have a look at what I ended up doing all on my own at the bottom of the article and discussion pages on Durer ] Have I justified enough the existence of such an infobox at the bottom of the article on Durer, to hardened Durer fans do you think? Johnalexwood 10:08, 17 February 2007 (UTC)

I understand your reasoning but I personally don't think it's a good idea. There are a lot of places and people that were mentioned in all kinds of shows, and if this was done for every tv-series or movie, or even the best researched ones, it would get out of hand extremely fast. Also, in terms of esthetics, I think it looks too much like a userbox, more than an infobox in my view. But that point is, to me, not nearly as important as my first one. I think there have been discussions about this stuff in the past, but I've been away for quite a while and I can't remember where that was. --JoanneB 11:02, 17 February 2007 (UTC)

Notability of The Mike Sherman Show

A tag has been placed on The Mike Sherman Show, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Misplaced Pages. This has been done because the article appears to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think that you can assert the notability of the subject, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the article's talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm the subject's notability under Misplaced Pages guidelines.

For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. WebHamster 16:00, 17 August 2007 (UTC)

Interview on Wikinews with Mark Bunker

We are looking for someone, particularly someone pro-Scientology to ask some questions here: Wikinews:Story preparation/Wikinews interviews Mark Bunker, producer of anti-Scientology website 'XenuTV'. I know he is anti-scienrology, but we need some questions to balance out the interview. Any help is appreciated. DragonFire1024 (talk) 21:47, 11 February 2008 (UTC)

Speedy deletion of ShareNow

A tag has been placed on ShareNow, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Misplaced Pages. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article seems to be blatant advertising which only promotes a company, product, group, service or person and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become an encyclopedia article. Please read our the guidelines on spam as well as the Misplaced Pages:Business' FAQ for more information.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Misplaced Pages's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the article does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that a copy be emailed to you. TheMile (talk) 02:34, 9 April 2008 (UTC)

Gizmondo

{{help me}}I added a paragraph at the bottom of a few hours ago. Now it's gone. No evidence it was ever there in history and nothing mentioned in the discussion page. How can that be and why was it deleted? And why isn't this wrapping?

Hi. I can help you.

First off;

  • In your help request, you started the line with a space. If you do this, it makes the text go all across the screen. For example;
This line starts with a space and is very long so it will go off the edge of the screen if it doesn't fit. The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.

No problem with that; just trying to help.

Now, regarding your edit; The edits you made were reverted by another user. If you look in the history of the page, , you can see that other editors have reverted yours.

The reason given is; " Revert previous two changes, reference is self hosted forgery)"

Do you think this is incorrect? (I will look at the changes now)

--  Chzz  ►  08:16, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

OK, having looked at the edit you made, I'm not sure if it's appropriate for the page. So the best thing to do would be, post a message in the article discussion page - Talk:Gizmondo. Create a new section, explain what you waht to add and why, and then wait for responses there. I will also ask the person who reverted the change to explain their action here.

Note: Please do not try to add the changes again! Discuss it with other editors, and hopefully you'll reach a WP:consensus on whether the changes are OK.

I hope this has helped,

--  Chzz  ►  08:25, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

Hi, I reverted your edit because Carl Freer has a history of forging documents that support false claims about himself and the companies he is involved in, and this has all the hallmarks of such a forgery. I won't list the details here, as it will assist Freer in improving his future forgeries. Colin Wilson of Begbies Traynor is on record to a Swedish national newspaper just two weeks ago, stating that no public comment will be made until the investigation is complete. I believe that you made the edit in good faith having been supplied the images by Freer, and would like to bring to your attention his past history so that you can make better judgements about what PR work you accept from him in future. The Wired and Financial Times references linked from the Gizmondo and Carl Freer articles give a good background. --Fugu Alienking (talk) 08:44, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

Please do not add inappropriate external links to Misplaced Pages, as you did to Narconon. Misplaced Pages is not a collection of links, nor should it be used for advertising or promotion. Please do not add content without citing reliable sources, as you did to David Gaiman. Before making potentially controversial edits, it is recommended that you discuss them first on the article's talk page. If you are familiar with Misplaced Pages:Citing sources please take this opportunity to add references to the article. Contact me if you need assistance adding references. Thank you. Please do not add unsourced info to articles, especially in a WP:BLP. Cirt (talk) 22:18, 27 August 2008 (UTC)

It appears that none of your edits added any cited sources at all to back up any of the information you added. That is why I removed that information from the article, especially in a WP:BLP article. Cirt (talk) 15:11, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

other entries don't have a reference for - This is not an excuse for not providing adequate sourcing for any individual article. Show me those "other entries" and those are also inadequately sourced as well and the unsourced info should be removed, immediately. Please read the links I have provided you with above regarding sourcing and citing sources. These pages are all also crucial with regard to considering appropriate sourcing: Misplaced Pages:Citing sources, Misplaced Pages:Verifiability, Misplaced Pages:Reliable sources, Misplaced Pages:No original research, Misplaced Pages:Biographies of living persons. Speedy deletion of Image:Robin frontpage.jpg

A tag has been placed on Image:Robin frontpage.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Misplaced Pages. This has been done under section I9 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the image appears to be a blatant copyright infringement. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted images or text borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on ] explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Misplaced Pages's policies and guidelines. Misplaced Pages:Biographies of living persons/Noticeboard

I have mentioned your contributions in a thread at this noticeboard. Cirt (talk) 19:18, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

Hossam Ramzy

Please stop adding unreferenced controversial biographical content to articles or any other Misplaced Pages page, as you did at Hossam Ramzy. Content of this nature could be regarded as defamatory and is in violation of Misplaced Pages policy. If you continue, you will be blocked from editing Misplaced Pages. Cirt (talk) 19:22, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

How can I be more clear? You added information to this article without backing it up to any sources whatsoever. Cirt (talk) 19:41, 28 August 2008 (UTC)
Sorry, but personal websites that you just added most certainly do not satisfy WP:RS. Cirt (talk) 20:35, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

a completely independent page I just found in Google and Scientology's own site - unfortunately these are not independent, secondary sources that satisfy WP:RS and WP:V. Cirt (talk) 20:45, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

http://www.adherents.com/ - appears to be some sort of a personal website that you admittedly found in a Google search. Does not satisfy WP:RS. Cirt (talk) 20:52, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

OK, so how about this encyclopedia site then? http://www.jazz.com/encyclopedia/corea-chick-armando-anthony Good enough? Johnalexwood (talk) 23:16, 28 August 2008 (UTC)
Done, added it. A satisfactory independent secondary source that complies with WP:RS/WP:V. Cirt (talk) 23:24, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for that, but what does "Hossam Ramzy, who has been a Scientologist," mean? He still is. Johnalexwood (talk) 23:39, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

I had restored your wording from the previous edit. Cirt (talk) 00:11, 29 August 2008 (UTC)

Only partially because it used to say "since 1977" but that data I got from his own Scientology page. Can that page be an external link by the way (same for Frank Laidlaw)? Johnalexwood (talk) 00:19, 29 August 2008 (UTC)

I tend to think those sorts of pages are equivalent to linkspamming, but I am not sure if that particular issue has been put to community consensus yet. Cirt (talk) 00:29, 29 August 2008 (UTC)

Why don't you just say "is a Scientologist" then (as it confirms in the jazz.com ref) - it would be better grammatically too.Johnalexwood (talk) 00:33, 29 August 2008 (UTC)

Done. Cirt (talk) 00:34, 29 August 2008 (UTC)

Great - thanks again.Johnalexwood (talk) 00:38, 29 August 2008 (UTC)

Edit summaries

Hello. Please don't forget to provide an edit summary, which wasn't included with your recent edit to Robin Hogarth. Thank you. ukexpat (talk) 19:46, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

Robin Hogarth

Especially in Biographies of living persons, no information in the article should be unsourced. As far as the image, it is clear it is a blatant copyright violation. If you have permission to use the image it should be deleted from English Misplaced Pages, uploaded instead to the sister project Wikimedia Commons, and then appropriate permission should be emailed and confirmed by Hogarth to Commons:Commons:OTRS. Cirt (talk) 19:49, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

I will remove the notice. Someone's official site is generally not the best source for the article about them - best to have an independent, secondary source that satisfies WP:RS and WP:V. Cirt (talk) 20:10, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

OK - fair enough, thanks. Johnalexwood (talk) 20:12, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

Blocked

Due to your repeated ignorance of the rules on reliable sources and the strict biographical article policy you have been blocked for 24 hours to stop the abuse. Please do not continue to add these links to these articles in the future. weburiedoursecretsinthegarden 21:07, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

OK, will make sure all the admin is done correctly here asap. Incidentally, in order to reply to you, should I put this on my Talk page or yours? You only get the yellow bar alert when I put it on your page, right? So you may not see this unless you make a point of checking back? Johnalexwood (talk) 21:48, 28 August 2008 (UTC)
I do not know what you mean by make sure all the admin is done correctly here asap. But yes, I will watch this page. Cirt (talk) 21:53, 28 August 2008 (UTC)
I mean get proof of the copyright ownership and submit it to the right place as I also have to do for Robin Hogarth's image - never done it before either, help! Sounds like it's difficult! Johnalexwood (talk) 22:00, 28 August 2008 (UTC)
Steps
  1. Contact the individuals that are the copyright owners of the media and inform them of your intentions of how their images will be used and released. Wikimedia Commons (the ideal place for free-use images) requires certain types of license.
  2. Create an account at Wikimedia Commons.
  3. Go to Commons:OTRS and go through the permissions steps there.

Cirt (talk) 22:07, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

OK, thank you very much for that.Johnalexwood (talk) 22:11, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

Frank Laidlaw

Do you think this is a good enough reference to prove that Frank Laidlaw is a Scientologist? http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qn4156/is_20021110/ai_n12580494/pg_2 It's an article in a newspaper so it must be true, right? ;) Johnalexwood (talk) 22:45, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

Done, added it. A satisfactory independent secondary source that complies with WP:RS/WP:V. Cirt (talk) 22:50, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

Great, thanks! So can you pls put the cats back in too? As for other citations that the entry says are needed, how are these?:

Done - added back the categories as they are now backed up by a WP:RS/WP:V secondary sourced cite.

Horay - many thanks.Johnalexwood (talk) 00:36, 29 August 2008 (UTC)

As for those new sources - 1, 2, and 6 look okay to me, the others are dubious at best. Cirt (talk) 00:32, 29 August 2008 (UTC)

OK, so when my ban is lifted, I will add the good ones in the right places.Johnalexwood (talk) 00:36, 29 August 2008 (UTC)

You may wish to take a look at Misplaced Pages:Citation templates - helps with formatting cites. Cirt (talk) 00:45, 29 August 2008 (UTC)

Would these links also mean the notability notice could be removed? Johnalexwood (talk) 00:45, 29 August 2008 (UTC)

No, the notability of the article's subject is dependent on if notability is asserted in the article text itself, which should of course be backed up by sources. Cirt (talk) 01:08, 29 August 2008 (UTC)

David Gaiman

Can his British scn cat be added back in? And what ref is needed for the fact that he has another daughter not listed, and for his date and place of birth? His birth certificate? Johnalexwood (talk) 00:42, 29 August 2008 (UTC)

Please see the edit summary by the anon-IP user that removed those cats, here for an explanation. And as for the 2nd part - secondary sources are much preferred over primary. Cirt (talk) 00:46, 29 August 2008 (UTC)

The thing about English/British is that WP doesn't automatically make someone cat British if he is cat English. You have to add both manually, otherwise, when you click the summary pages, it looks as if David is English but not British! Johnalexwood (talk) 00:59, 29 August 2008 (UTC)

Unfortunately, nope. Appears to be a personal website. Cirt (talk) 02:08, 29 August 2008 (UTC)

No. Generally NNDB is not a source that satisfies WP:RS. (Unless corroborated with another source, perhaps.) Cirt (talk) 02:07, 2 September 2008 (UTC)

OK, here are two more sites that just might corroberate enough. http://wireimage.com/itemlistings.aspx?igi=294631&cl=1 (photos 12 and 23), http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=299631167 (search for 'woody' and 'scientology' on that page). What do you think? Johnalexwood (talk) 03:37, 2 September 2008 (UTC)

Please take a moment to look at WP:RS. Neither of those sources are appropriate whatsoever. Think more in terms of published secondary sources independent of the article's subject (along the lines of the "nutshell" at WP:NOTE). Cirt (talk) 03:42, 2 September 2008 (UTC)

OK thanks, I'll keep looking. Johnalexwood (talk) 04:24, 2 September 2008 (UTC)

Reliance on links to references

Regarding your email, if there is a question about reliance on a particular source for an article, you can bring in input from a wider chunk of the community by starting a Request for Comment on the talk page of that particular article. Alternatively, you could also start a new subsection at the Reliable Sources Noticeboard about usage of a specific source in Misplaced Pages, in general. If the article is a biography of a living person, you could ask at the Biography of Living Persons Noticeboard. Hope that answers your question, Cirt (talk) 19:25, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

Kenton Gray

Actually, it is sourced to a WP:RS source. Cirt (talk) 19:39, 25 October 2008 (UTC)

I think it is most certainly appropriate and relevant information. Cirt (talk) 19:52, 25 October 2008 (UTC)
It would be a good idea and encouraged to add some additional biographical material about the individual himself, but one sentence about this particular issue is appropriate. Cirt (talk) 20:12, 25 October 2008 (UTC)

It is not simply informative information about Dianetics - but the decoration chosen by Gray for his car. Cirt (talk) 20:23, 25 October 2008 (UTC)

October 2008 - conflict of interest at article ShareNow

If you have a close connection to some of the people, places or things you have written about in the article ShareNow, you may have a conflict of interest. In keeping with Misplaced Pages's neutral point of view policy, edits where there is a conflict of interest, or where such a conflict might reasonably be inferred from the tone of the edit and the proximity of the editor to the subject, are strongly discouraged. If you have a conflict of interest, you should avoid or exercise great caution when:

  1. editing or creating articles related to you, your organization, or its competitors, as well as projects and products they are involved with;
  2. participating in deletion discussions about articles related to your organization or its competitors;
  3. linking to the Misplaced Pages article or website of your organization in other articles (see Misplaced Pages:Spam); and,

Marc Koska

Seems poorly structured like a resume. Cirt (talk) 23:58, 6 April 2009 (UTC)

  • Cirt, you mean just the Recognition section? (The rest seems fine to me.) If so, then why did you add a "This article may not meet the notability guideline for biographies." box to it? He's an OBE, won countless awards, been written about in many newspapers including the Sunday Times, changed the law in India and has saved millions of lives with his invention. How much more notable does he need to be?? Johnalexwood (talk) 10:20, 7 April 2009 (UTC)
I meant to also add {{likeresume}}. Feel free to read up at WP:NOTE to see how to satisfy this. WP:CIT is helpful for proper formatting of citations instead of one big external link. I also note a majority of this article is uncited. Cirt (talk) 23:44, 7 April 2009 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of The Jive Aces

The article The Jive Aces has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Previously deleted at AFD. No significant coverage in reliable sources - references are generally only inclusion of the band in lists of artists playing at various minor festivals.

While all contributions to Misplaced Pages are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the Proposed Deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The Speedy Deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and Articles for Deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Michig (talk) 05:32, 17 August 2009 (UTC)

Articles for deletion nomination of The Jive Aces

I have nominated The Jive Aces, an article that you created, for deletion. I do not think that this article satisfies Misplaced Pages's criteria for inclusion, and have explained why at Misplaced Pages:Articles for deletion/The Jive Aces (2nd nomination). Your opinions on the matter are welcome at that same discussion page; also, you are welcome to edit the article to address these concerns. Thank you for your time.

Please contact me if you're unsure why you received this message. Michig (talk) 11:11, 17 August 2009 (UTC)

I have withdrawn the nomination as I have found some coverage that may help the article with regards to establishing notability. I'll try and add these to the article's talk page later today. Regards. --Michig (talk) 11:47, 17 August 2009 (UTC)
Regarding 'genuine sources', the ones I added actually gave meaningful coverage to the band rather than just the briefest of mentions. Events listings and articles about festivals etc. that simply mention the band once are not really useful as references, especially when there are several that are basically doing the same thing, and articles that lack references that demonstrate that the subject has received significant coverage in reliable sources tend to get deleted. The article should be sourced well enough to stay now, but could still benefit from expansion and further sources that discuss the band in detail. Hope that answers your question. Regards.--Michig (talk) 05:52, 19 August 2009 (UTC)

Re: British/English Scientologts cat

Hello. It's best to go for the most specific category. If the members are all English, then I would use English Scientologists. If some are from other parts of Britain or if you're not sure whether they're all English, I would go for the parent category - British Scientologists. It isn't necessary for any article to be in both categories as one is the parent category of the other. Cheers. --Michig (talk) 10:15, 31 August 2009 (UTC)

Well actually John Fordham, the sax player, is Maori, born in New Zealand but has lived here since a child (according to their press pack) so I assume has dual nationality, so I'll just use the English cat. I think it would be great if there was hierarchical intelligence built into categories so if 'English' was used, WP would automatically include 'British' as well, because, when someone is English, they are also British. RE: Marc Koska

We don't really like to indefinitely protect articles when blocks would serve the same purpose. Lets wait a bit and block a few users, and perhaps have a checkuser look into it once we have a few more recent accounts. If it does get really bad, WP:RFPP. - Rjd0060 (talk) 19:10, 28 November 2009 (UTC)

Since you are already autoconfirmed, you will be able to edit it like normal. - Rjd0060 (talk) 03:15, 29 November 2009 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Advance Centre for The Scotson Technique

A tag has been placed on Advance Centre for The Scotson Technique requesting that it be speedily deleted from Misplaced Pages. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about an organization or company, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for organizations and companies. You may also wish to consider using a Wizard to help you create articles - see the Article Wizard.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Misplaced Pages's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. Speedy deletion nomination of The Safepoint Trust

A tag has been placed on The Safepoint Trust, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Misplaced Pages. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, product, group, service or person and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become an encyclopedia article. Please read the guidelines on spam as well as Misplaced Pages:FAQ/Business for more information. You may also wish to consider using a Wizard to help you create articles - see the Article Wizard.
