William E. Donaldson Correctional Facility is an Alabama Department of Corrections prison for men located in unincorporated Jefferson County, Alabama, near Bessemer.

History

In October 1982 the facility, then the West Jefferson Correctional Facility, opened with dormitories for 700 minimum and medium custody prisoners and 16 individual cells. Donaldson later was expanded to its current capacity.

Operations

Donaldson has a capacity of 1,492 prisoners. ADOC classifies the prison as a maximum security institution. Donaldson focuses on housing prisoners who repeat offenses and/or have multiple violent offenses who have long sentences and/or are difficult to manage in terms of their behavior. Several hundred of Donaldson's inmates have life without parole sentences. Donaldson has a death row, with a capacity of 24 prisoners, for condemned prisoners who need to be incarcerated in the Birmingham judicial area.
