In 2003 census the city had about 266,100 inhabitants. Although the census didn't give data on ethnicity, the BBC claims the city has a predominantly kurdish population.
Batman is an important oil producing area. There is a railway track at Kurtalan, near this city, which runs all the way to Istanbul. There is also an airport near Batman. The name is short for the Bati Raman mountains.
