Bowie (/ˈbuːiː/) is a city in Montague County, Texas, United States. The population was 5,219 at the 2000 census.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, Bowie has a total area of 3.8 square miles (9.8 km²), of which, 3.8 square miles (9.8 km²) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km²) of it (0.53%) is water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there were 5,219 people, 2,106 households, and 1,392 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,378.6 people per square mile (531.7/km²). There were 2,476 housing units at an average density of 654.0 per square mile (252.2/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 95.96% White, 0.08% African American, 0.73% Native American, 0.50% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 1.23% from other races, and 1.48% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.73% of the population.

There were 2,106 households out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.5% were married couples living together, 10.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.9% were non-families. 31.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 18.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.38 and the average family size was 2.98.

In the city the population was spread out with 25.0% under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 24.1% from 25 to 44, 20.5% from 45 to 64, and 22.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 82.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 79.3 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $29,452, and the median income for a family was $37,116. Males had a median income of $30,870 versus $19,506 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,950. About 11.6% of families and 14.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.8% of those under age 18 and 13.0% of those age 65 or over.

Education

The City of Bowie is served by the Bowie Independent School District as well as a branch campus of North Central Texas College and a brand new high school as of 2009.

Natives

Corey "Fitz" Fitzner graduated from Bowie High School in 1996. After graduation from Washington State University, Fitz worked as a DJ on KNIN-FM in Wichita Falls, Texas. On January 24, 2011, Fitzner co-hosted Live with Regis and Kelly, where he interviewed Anthony Hopkins. Fitzner currently hosts Fitz in the Morning on KKWF-FM in Seattle, Washington.
