In mediaval ages it was partly Prussian and Lithuanian. From 1328 on it shares history of Prussia: under the rule of Teutonic Order until 1525, then part of Ducal Prussia until 1701 and then until 1918 part of the Kingdom of Prussia. From the beginning to the end of Imperial Germany, this is from 1871 to 1920 it belonged to Germany, from 1920 to 1923 it was governed by France as Memelland district. In 1923 Lithuanian troops took over control. From 1926 on, it was gouverned under Martial Law by Lithuania to end autonomy of German majority. In March 1939 in was handed back from Lithuania to Germany, being again part of East Prussia until the end of Second World War and the Expulsion of Germans after World War II.
