It was sculpted by local stonemason Frank Rusconi and opened by the then Prime Minister of Australia Joseph Lyons in 1932.
The statue was inspired by Jack O'Hagan's song, Where the Dog Sits on the Tuckerbox (five miles from Gundagai).
A large highway side development has occurred in 2006 with a KFC, Subway, McCafe, BP Service Station and the Tuckerbox restaurant opening in one large food court style complex.
