Michael Harris (born January 6, 1956) is an academic scholar with dual American and Israeli citizenship. Harris is the Dean and Professor at The College of Public Service and Urban Affairs at Tennessee State University, He is also a Senior Fellow with the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) and a Fellow, with SUNY, The Levin Institute .

Education and early career

Born in South Africa, immigrated to Israel as a child, grew up on a commune, Timorim. He served in the Israeli Defense Forces, rising to the rank of major. He was the vice president for finance & marketing at Tomer Industries, Timorim (1986-1989). He is married to Tali Harris and has three sons Ronen, Asaf, and Amit.

Holds a bachelor's degree in economics and business administration from Bar-Ilan University (1982) his master’s degree in Public Policy from Tel-Aviv University (1986) and a Ph.D. in public policy from Indiana University (1993). He is a graduate of two of the Harvard Graduate School of Education leadership programs (IEM and MDP). He participated in the Oxford Round Table at Harris Manchester College; University of Oxford.

Leadership and Career Path

Harris is the Dean and Professor at The College of Public Service and Urban Affairs at Tennessee State University, . He is also a Senior Fellow with the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) and a Fellow, ] with SUNY, The Levin Institute

Harris has developed a framework for leading a paradigm shift in higher education toward a learned-centered methodology.

Served as the sixth Chancellor of Indiana University Kokomo and a Professor of Public and Environmental Affairs, Business, and Education (2010–12). . He served as Provost and Vice president of academic affairs and student affairs at Kettering University (2007 to 2010). Harris was the Vice President for Academic Affairs at Ferris State University (2004-2007). Faculty member and administrator at Eastern Michigan University (1994–2004) and a faculty member at the Graduate Program on Public Policy at Tel Aviv University(1993-1994).

Recognition

In Eastern Michigan University: A Sesquicentennial Portrait (1999) Harris was described as one of the "more prominent scholars to have graced the campus during the first 150 years." "An experienced researcher and teacher."

2002, was selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who in America 56 Edition

2011, the Kokomo Perspective stated that "Governor Mitch Daniels appointed Indiana University Kokomo Chancellor Michael Harris to serve on the Indiana Automotive Council (IAC)—a newly formed group of automotive experts to enhance, grow, and promote the automotive industry in Indiana."

2011, The Kokomo Perspective named Dr. Harris, the Person of the Year for 2011, stating, "He wasted little time in making his presence felt academically, athletically, and as a member of the larger community."

In 2012 Maariv selected Dr. Harris as one of the "10 Most Successful Israelis in 10 Different Fields in the World". Dr. Harris was selected as the most successful Israeli in academics. The same year he assumed duties as “Honorary Wing Commander” for the 434th Air Refueling Wing at Grissom Air Reserve Base.
