JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: All Star Battle (ジョジョの奇妙な冒険 オールスターバトル, JoJo no Kimyō na Bōken Ōru Sutā Batoru) is a fighting game developed by CyberConnect2 and published by Namco Bandai Games for PlayStation 3. Based on Hirohiko Araki's long-running manga series, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, the game allows players to compete against each other using over 30 characters taken from all eight current story arcs. The game was released in Japan on August 29, 2013, and will be released in North America and Europe in 2014.
Gameplay
JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: All Star Battle is a 3D fighting game in which players can fight against each other using characters taken from all eight current story arcs from the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure manga series, fighting in various locations taken from the manga. Much like other fighting games, the game includes a traditional set of status bars for the characters including the standard health bar (referred to as Stamina (体力, Tairyoku) to differentiate it from a different HP bar elsewhere in the game) which is depleted when attacked, as well as a Guard Gauge which causes the characters guard to break when depleted. The "super" bar is known as the Heart Heat Gauge (ハートヒートゲージ, Hāto Hīto Gēji) that, when filled, allows characters to unleash their super attacks which are named Heart Heat Attacks (ハートヒートアタック, Hāto Hīto Attakku, HHA) and Great Heat Attacks (グレートヒートアタック, Gurēto Hīto Attaku, GHA). Also in the game are Stylish Moves (スタイリッシュムーブ, Sutairisshu Mūbu), special dodges that deplete the Guard Gauge but take on the form of the series' iconic poses. The Easy Beat (イージービート, Ījī Bīto) system allows beginner players to easily string a series of complex combos that finish with a Heart Heat Attack. The Strange Cancel (プッツンキャンセル, Puttsun Kyanseru) depletes a level of a player's Heart Heat Gauge but allows them to cancel their ongoing combo to chain into a new one.
Each stage features Stage Gimmicks (ステージギミック, Sutēji Gimikku), stage hazards that can be activated if a character is knocked down in a certain location on the stage. These include the appearance of Yoshihiro Kira using his Stand Atom Heart Father in the Kira's House stage or Weather Report causing a rain of poison arrow frogs on the Green Dolphin Street Prison stage. Also included are Situation Finishes (シチュエーションフィニッシュ, Shichuēshon Finisshu), stage-specific defeat scenes after a character is defeated in a particular part of the stage via HHA or GHA. Situation Finishes include being thrown off the space shuttle and then falling infinitely down towards the horizon on the Kennedy Space Center stage or a scene re-enacting Kakyoin's death being thrown into a water tower on the Cairo Streets stage.
Rush Mode (ラッシュモード, Rasshu Mōdo) is activated when two characters with "Rush" type attacks make contact at the same time, such as Jotaro Kujo's "Ora Ora!" (オラオラッ!) attack colliding with DIO's "Muda Muda Muda Muda!" (無駄無駄無駄無駄ァーッ) attack, introducing a button mashing minigame, similar to the "Blazing Fists Match" from Heritage for the Future, to see who does damage. Characters can enter one of two states when their health is relatively low. Rumble Mode (ゴゴゴモード, Gogogo Mōdo), signified by a red aura, increases their attack strength and the restoration rate of their Heart Heat Gauge while Resolve Mode (覚悟モード, Kakugo Mōdo), signified by a yellow aura, gives them a temporary impenetrable armor as well. As of the second campaign, only five characters can activate Resolve Mode: Giorno, Bucciarati, Mista, Fugo, and Ermes.
Game modes
All Star Battle features many different game modes. Story Mode is a single player option that allows players to go through an original story inspired by the eight parts of the manga, with narration from Tōru Ōkawa. Players control the protagonists of the series, partly reenacting various scenes from the manga. Winning Scenarios awards the player Gold that they can use to buy Support Items, items that change certain conditions in battle, for Story Mode or in the Gallery Shop. After completing a Part's Story Mode once, a new option known as Another Battle opens up, allowing the player to play as the opposite character in the Story Mode matches, taking on the role of the series' antagonists. There are also a series of Secret Missions in each Story Mode Scenario, requiring the player to hit the opponent with a particular move or not losing a match. These award additional Gold as well as artwork and character models not accessible from the Gallery Shop. It is only through Story Mode that additional characters are unlocked through play. However, downloadable characters expand Story Mode with their own new Scenarios.
Campaign Mode is an online mode where players can unlock items known as Customize Medals which allow them to change the preset appearance and mannerisms of their unlocked characters. Some Customize Medals have new victory phrases and victory poses, but the rarer Customize Medals unlock alternate color palletes and alternate outfits for characters. Campaign Mode features a feature known as Energy, similar to the number of lives available in social network games. Energy is used to enter a match or can be used in random events that will benefit the player. Matches in Campaign Mode are either fought against a Vision, a computer player customized by another player, or a Boss, computer players which only appear below 5% of the time which have separate HP bars outside of battle. Defeating either awards the player Customize Medals, but Bosses possess the rarer Medals and only after the HP bar is completely depleted. Boss HP is depleted by a set amount after each match (win or lose), but the player can increase this amount by expending more Energy. Bosses are also only available for a short period of time after first encountering one, so the player must defeat them quickly or else risk having to wait for another random Boss encounter or a random event that will increase the ability to encounter a Boss. Energy is restored at a rate of one per 20 minutes, although special campaigns may speed up the process. The player can also receive Energy as a result of a random event, or it can be purchased via microtransactions.
Versus Mode features both local offline play and online play in either free battles or ranked matches which affect a player's Battle Score. Customize Mode allows players to utilize the Customize Medals won through Campaign Mode to change their character's taunt phrases, taunt poses, and winning poses, as well as customize their own Vision other players compete against in Campaign Mode. There is also an option to modify the quote that appears on the Player Card used in Versus Mode online play, with new quotes won through increasing one's Campaign Mode Campaign Score, and an option to view the profile cards other players met through Versus Mode. Gallery Mode displays all of the 2D artwork, 3D character models, sound test, and "JoJo's Dictionary", a collection of trivia relating to characters in the game. The mode also features a Gallery Shop where the player purchases entries for the other Gallery Mode options. In addition, the game features a standard Practice Mode and an Options Mode.

There are a total of 32 playable characters available on the game disc, with 14 unlocked from the start. Additional characters are available as part of DLC campaigns, eventually bringing the total number of characters to 41. One downloadable character, Ikuro Hashizawa, is not from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure but rather from Hirohiko Araki's earlier manga series Baoh; he was teased at in the seventh promotional video.
Characters possess one of five Battle Styles: Ripple (波紋, Hamon), Vampirism (吸血, Kyūketsu), Mode (流法(モード), Mōdo), Stand (スタンド, Sutando), and Horseback (騎乗, Kijō). However, some characters may possess aspects of the other Battle Styles. Ripple users can use the Ripple to recharge their Heart Heat Gauge or utilize it in stronger versions of their special attacks. Vampires can use draining attacks to restore their health and Heart Heat Gauge. Mode users can activate their respective Modes, which increases their power but drains their Heart Heat Gauge. Both Vampires and Mode users are able to slightly heal damage they receive, but are limited to nighttime or indoor stages and are weak to Ripple attacks; they also have a unique animation for the DIO's Mansion stage Situation Finish. Stand users can bring out their respective Stand at will, offering different movesets and special attacks. They also possess a unique Stand Rush (スタンドラッシュ, Sutando Rasshu) ability that allows them to unsync with the Stand mid combo to begin a new combo. Some Stands do not have an on or off mode and these characters do not possess some of the benefits of other Stand using characters. Horseback riders have the ability to call their horse at will, offering up different movesents on or off their horses and these characters also possess Stands. Ikuro Hashizawa has an as of yet undetermined Battle Style based on the abilities he displays in Baoh. Several characters possess unique additional status bars or icons, such as Guido Mista's available ammunition and members of Sex Pistols, Enrico Pucci's 14 Words, or the Corpse (遺体, Itai) parts for any character from Steel Ball Run.

Development
All Star Battle was first announced in July 2012. The game is built with an engine known as the JoJo Shading Requiem (JOJO・シェーディング・レクイエム, JoJo Shēingu Rekuiemu), which gives it a stylized manga look.
The game is sold as both a Standard edition and a limited edition "Gold Experience Box" (黄金体験BOX(ゴールド・エクスペリエンスボックス), Gōrudo Ekusuperiensu Bokkusu), which contains a gold plate etching of Giorno Giovanna and his Stand Gold Experience, a figure statue of Jotaro Kujo and his Stand Star Platinum, and the game's original soundtrack on a CD resembling the power of the Stand Whitesnake. First pressings of both the Standard and limited editions include a memo pad designed to look like Part 4 supporting character Hayato Kawajiri under the thrall of Rohan Kishibe's Heaven's Door Stand and a download code to access the character Yoshikage Kira. In the seventh promotional video for the games, Namco Bandai announced it would be providing all downloadable characters for half-price through September 25, 2013, due to the preorders. At the 2013 Tokyo Game Show, Namco Bandai made another announcement that they would be continuing this half-price campaign through at least Campaign 3.
Several downloadable content campaigns are planned for release, featuring additional playable characters. The first online campaign "The Darkness That Haunts Morioh Town" (杜王町に巣食う闇, Moriō-chō ni Sukuu Yami) was made available at launch and features 144 Customize Medals and Yoshikage Kira and Shigekiyo Yangu as downloadable characters. The second online campaign "The Ferocious Beast" (どう猛な野獣, Dōmō na Yajū) was released on September 12, 2013, adds an additional 128 Customize Medals and Iggy and Pannacotta Fugo as downloadable characters. The third campaign "The Ripple Masters" (波紋の達人, Hamon no Tatsujin) features an additional 128 Customize Medals and Lisa Lisa and Old Joseph as downloadable characters, set for release on September 26, 2013. The fourth campaign is titled "The Executioners of Fear" (恐怖の処刑人, Kyōfu no Shokeinin), featuring Vanilla Ice and Narsico Anasui as downloadable characters, and the fifth is titled "I Am Baoh!" (これが!バオーだッ!!, Kore ga! Baō da!!), adding Ikuro Hashizawa as a downloadable character.
On September 19, 2013, Namco Bandai Games announced it would be releasing the game in North America, Europe, and Australia in 2014.
Reception
Famitsu gave All Star Battle a perfect 40/40. The game was the winner of the 2012 "Japan Game Awards". The game sold 500 thousand pre-orders; the Namco Bandai's producer Noriaki Niino thanked fans of the comic series for making the game such a success. In an import review, Kotaku praised the game for its imagination and fanservice, but acknowledged glaring problems such as balance issues and Campaign Mode's structure that leans towards microtransaction-type social games. In response to such criticisms, CyberConnect2 released an update to the system to address balance problems on September 11, 2013, with a second update to further address these issues for October 2013; the recharge rate for Energy in Campaign Mode was also sped up starting September 6, 2013, without any announced final date.
Notes
- The original Yoshikage Kira is downloadable content available via a code included in first edition pressings of the game or bundled with the downloadable version from the PlayStation Store.
- In an announcement on the official website on September 5, 2013, Namco Bandai and CyberConnect 2 revealed they would be making Pannacotta Fugo a free download.
