Alejandro Betancourt López (born 1980, Caracas, Venezuela) is a Venezuelan businessman. He serves as Chairman and CEO of Derwick Associates, an engineering, procurement and construction company. Betancourt is currently the target of two lawsuits alleging he and his company paid bribes to Venezuelan government officials to obtain Derwick's contracts. However, according to the state-sponsored newspaper Correo del Orinoco, the company has denied the allegations in a official note.
Family
Alejandro Betancourt Lopez is the great grandson of Hermógenes López. Mr. Lopez was the 22nd President of Venezuela. Mr. Lopez is one of persons responsible for bringing electricity to Valencia, at the time the most important State of Venezuela.
Present
In October 2013, Spanish newspaper ABC published on its news pages about how Alejandro Betancourt López, whom it nicknames a "bolichico" stands accused of "influence trafficking" and "bribery payments", and that Derwick Associates was being sued alongside López for corruption. Two months later, in January 2014, ABC the same newspaper published in its business supplement an interview with Betancourt López where he explained Derwick's strategy to become a major supplier of technology for Latin-America.
Awards
In December 2013, Betancourt received the award issued by the Spanish magazine Capital for the "best technological initiative in Latin-America". The award recognized the construction of Derwick's TTC (Turbine Technology Center), which is located in an industrial area of Guácara, Carabobo State in Venezuela, measuring 10.000m2, with garages, offices and a training facility.
Accusations of bribery
Betancourt has been sued in New York Federal Court under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act by Washington businessman Otto Reich who alleged that Derwick Associates executives (including Betancourt) defamed him and caused his own consulting business to suffer financial losses. Reich claimed Derwick paid bribes for every contract received from the Venezuelan government. In a separate legal action, Thor Leonardo Halvorssen Mendoza, a human rights lawyer, sued Betancourt and his company, claiming they paid a $50,000,000 bribe to Diosdado Cabello, Speaker of the House of the Venezuelan National Assembly.
In response, Banco Banesco and Derwick Associates claim that the accusations in both lawsuits are false.
