Venod Sharma (born January 10, 1948) is an Indian politician who was a leader of Indian National Congress party from Haryana before he resigned in March 2014. He is father of Manu Sharma, who is serving life imprisonment for the murder of Jessica Lall. He was a Minister of State in the Ministry of Civil Supplies, Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution at in the P.V. Narasimha Rao cabinet (inducted 1995).
Venod Sharma is currently the MLA of Ambala city.
Early life
Born in Doraha, a city of Ludhiana, Venod Sharma is the son of Pandit Kedar Nath Sharma. After his studies and graduation from Chandigarh, Venod Sharma became actively involved with the social cause of empowerment for women.
His father Kedar Nath Sharma was a loyal supporter of the third Prime Minister of India Indira Gandhi and was the Vice President of Punjab Congress Committee as well as the President of the Chandigarh UT Congress Committee.
Political career
The former Indian National Congress leader, Venod Sharma belonged to the General category of Ambala constituency and had a long association of more than 40 years with the Congress party. Venod has been the Member of Parliament from Rajya Sabha and MLA from Haryana twice and is currently the sitting MLA from Ambala. He has been elected thrice and the years of elections were 1980, 2005 and 2009 respectively.
At the time of his election, the total number of polls was 187157 whereas the number of the polled votes was 131569. With that huge amount of voting, Venod Sharma won with 69435 where the closest rival bagged 33885, making it a big victory for the then Congress leader.
Sharma apart from his current duties was the President of the Chandigarh unit of Congress. He has been a minister in the centre and was also introduced in the Haryana cabinet during the first term of Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda.
A Brahmin leader, Venod Sharma who belongs to a family of staunch Congress loyalists from Punjab and Chandigarh was the Union Minister of State for Food and Supplies in 1995. He enjoys considerable Brahmin support in Haryana, and is considered as the undisputed leader of Brahmins and Upper castes in Haryana and Punjab.
Sharma was keeping his distance from Congress affairs since January 2014. Neither did he attend party meetings, nor did he turn up for the budget session of the Haryana assembly.
Finally, on March 5, 2014, he was expelled by the congress for anti-party activities.
On July 2nd, Venod Sharma along with the supporters of Janchetna party courted arrest at the office of Haryana staff selection commission in Panchkula when he was protesting against the anomalies prevalent in the interview system of government jobs in Haryana.
He has been constantly attacking the interview system in government jobs due to the widespread allegations of favoritism and nepotism being practiced during such interviews. Ever since the interview process has been included in the recruitment process of Staff selection commission (SSC) of Haryana, it has come under attack for adoption of dubious practices in selections of the candidates for SSC.
Formation of Janchetna party: On 22nd June, 2014, Venod Sharma announced the formation of his own political party by the name of Janchetna party during a press conference in Ambala. He attacked the malpractices prevailing in the interview process of government jobs and said that he will raise his voice against this malpractice. On July 2nd, Venod Sharma along with the supporters of Janchetna party courted arrest at the office of Haryana staff selection commission in Panchkula when he was protesting against the anomalies prevalent in the interview system of government jobs in Haryana. He has been constantly attacking the interview system in government jobs due to the widespread allegations of favoritism and nepotism being practiced during such interviews. Ever since the interview process has been included in the recruitment process of Staff selection commission (SSC) of Haryana, it has come under attack for adoption of dubious practices in selections of the candidates for SSC.

In 2005, Venod Sharma won the Ambala City seat with a victory margin of more than 32,000 votes, whereas in 2009 the win margin was 35,000 votes. Sharma apart from his current duties was the President of the Chandigarh unit of Congress. He was also introduced in the Haryana cabinet during the first term of Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda.
Venod Sharma's family hails from Punjab and Chandigarh, which had a close association with Congress for a long duration. He enjoys considerable Brahmin support in Haryana, and is a prominent leader of Brahmins and upper castes in Haryana and Punjab.
Sharma dissociated himself from Congress affairs since January 2014 and stopped attending the party meetings. He also skipped the budget session of the Haryana assembly. He was actively involved with grass root workers and found that the grass root workers were being ignored by the Congress high command. He raised his voice against this practice. Finally, on March 5, 2014, he left Congress for completely ignoring the grass root workers.

Personal life
Venod Sharma is married to Smt. Shakti Rani Sharma and has three children (two sons and one daughter). Sharma & his family have been involved in many NGO activities like health camps, blood donation drives, eye check-ups in Ambala region under the aegis of “Ambala Healthcare & Welfare Society”. He is involved in many philanthropic activities across Haryana. He is working for empowerment of women and known for fighting for the cause of the poor. He is also an avid cricket fan and has done a lot in developing the sport and its prospects in Ambala.
