Guntakal Railway Division is one of the six divisions of South Central Railway zone (SCR) of the Indian Railways. The headquarters of the division is at Guntakal and its zonal headquarters is at Secunderabad.

History

Guntakal division was formed in the year 1956, it was under Southern Railway zone. Later, on 2 October 1977, it was transferred to South Central Railway zone.

Routes

Guntakal division is first in terms of route 1307.07 km and second highest division in terms of track 1872.47 km in South Central Railway. During 2010-11, it has been declared as total Broad gauge after the PakalaDharmavaram line completion. It covers the states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

Economy

The division has provides services in passenger and cargo transport. In 2011-12, passenger traffic was ₹41.952 million (US$500,000) and passenger earnings were ₹318.08 crore (US$38 million), the originating load was recorded as 9.953 MT. The division generates revenue mainly because of tourist places of religious importance like Tirupati temple and many more often visited daily by thousands. In addition to divine blessings, Guntakal Division is endowed with rich minerals, iron ore, barytes, lime stone and a host of natural stones. The ommercial, industrial and port activities too generate income to the division. The goods traffic is increasing and the division is growing year by year both in passenger and goods traffic.
