After 1998 he primarily wrote about doping, most notably the book L.A. Confidentiel, jointly written with David Walsh, about Lance Armstrong that according to critics contains circumstancial evidence to support its claim that he may have used performance-enhancing drugs. A defamation suit by Armstrong is pending against Ballester. One suit against Walsh has already been settled in Armstrong's favour.
