St Christopher Iba Mar Diop College of Medicine (SCIMD-COM) is a medical college located in Luton, England (30 miles north of London). The college is a branch campus of the Universite El Hadj Ibrahima Niasse (UEIN) in Dakar, Senegal. Two medical colleges exist under the umbrella of parent university UEIN: Ecole de Médecine St Christopher Iba Mar Diop (EM-SCIMD) in Dakar and SCIMD-COM in Luton. SCIMD-COM offers two curricula: a four-year curriculum for students who have previously earned a baccalaureate degree and a six-year curriculum for other students. Instruction for both programs is conducted in English. The branch campus of SCIMD-COM was established in 2000 as St. Christopher's College of Medicine, but since 2006 degrees are awarded from the University. EM-SCIMD offers a five-year curriculum that is conducted in French. All programs award the Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree through the authority of UEIN, allowing graduates to apply for licensure to practice medicine in Senegal, Canada, most states of the United States, as well as other countries. As of July 2006 no state with a formal accreditation process has approved SCIMD-COM . SC-IMD currently has several fully licensed graduates and an increasing number of residents placed via the NRMP in many states throughout the US
After completing five semesters of the Basic Medical Sciences (and all applicable premedical coursework) on campus in Luton, students enter the Clinical Sciences and complete a series of clinical clerkships in the USA, UK, or Senegal. The US/Canadian administrative offices are located in Hempstead, NY and the UK/European Union administrative offices are located in Luton, England.File:SCIMD Seal.pngSCIMD-COM is listed in the World Health Organization World Directory of Medical Schools as well as in the FAIMER/IMED database of medical schools. Graduates of SCIMD-COM are allowed by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) of the United States of America to register for and take the United States Medical Licensure Examination as well as receive certification that is the first step in becoming a licensed physician. As of March 2006, graduates of SCIMD-COM that attended the Luton branch campus are not eligible for registration by the General Medical Council (GMC) of the United Kingdom, nor are they allowed to sit for the Professional and Linguistic Assessment Board (PLAB) exam, due to the GMC's concerns over the school's branch campus location in the UK versus the charter and location of its main campus in Senegal, as well as quality assurance arrangements between the branch campus and the main campus.. Prior to its investigation and decision, the GMC has let SCIMD students sit for the PLAB and go onto postgraduate training in NHS hospitals throughout the UK.
