The 49th Annual Grammy Awards will honor the best in music of the recording year of 2006. The 2006 recording year started on October 1, 2005 and will end on September 30, 2006. The awards will be handed out on Sunday February 11, 2007 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, CA.

The only people who are allowed to vote for the Grammy Awards are those who are members of the National Academy of the Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS). In order to be a member you need to have worked on six albums (in terms of production, engineering, mixing, or being the recording artist). NARAS members are peers of all who submit their work to the recording Academy. NARAS members are to vote based upon the quality of the work that has been submitted. It is highly stressed to voting NARAS members not to look at sales or charts when voting. Artists, producers, engineers/mixers or record companies are allowed to make submissions to the Recording Academy. The deadline for all submissions for the 49th Annual Grammy Awards is September 1, 2006. nominating ballots are sent to NARAS members by October 1, 2006 which is after the 2006 recording year ends. On the ballot you are allowed to nomminated any of the work submitted. You can only vote in eight fields other than the general field. You can vote to nominate up to five works in for an award.

After a member is done nomminating, he or she will sent the ballot back to NARAS' headquaters in Santa Monica, CA. Once the nominating process is complete the votes are counted. The artists who received the top five most votes become the nomminees for the 49th Annual Grammy Awards. (Note: fewer or less than five nomminees is the result of a tie.) The nomminations will be announced on December 2, 2006. The voting ballots will be mailed to every NARAS member. They are all allowed to vote in the general field which includes the awards for Record, Album and Song of the Year as well as Best New Artist. NARAS members can vote in eight other fields, however the Latin field is voted on by members of the Latin Academy of the Recording Arts & Sciences (LARAS). NARAS members are to judge by quality, not sales or charts when casting votes. After casting votes the ballots are to be mailed back to NARAS's headquaters in Santa Monica, CA. All the votes are counted. The ones who have the most amount of votes for an award are proclaimed as the winners. The winners are announced on Sunday, February 11, 2007 at the 49th Annual Grammy Awards.

108 different awards will be handed out on Grammy night. Most awards will be handed out at the pre telecast portion of the show.
