WSIU is a PBS member television station broadcasting on channel 8, located in Carbondale, Illinois, at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. SIUC also operates a repeater station, WUSI, channel 16, in Olney, Illinois. WSIU/WUSI also broadcast digital signals, WSIU on 40, WUSI on 19. Altogether, the stations reach portions of the states of Illinois, Missouri, Kentucky, and Indiana.
SIUC also operates radio stations in both cities with the same callsigns; they are members of NPR and affiliates of PRI. A rebroadcaster of the radio stations, WVSI-FM, transmits from Mount Vernon, Illinois.
WSIU-TV and WUSI-TV are unusual among television stations, and PBS stations in particular, in that they both broadcast in monophonic audio, rather than stereo, (however the digital channels are broadcast in stereo). Consequently, many viewers who live within WSIU-TV's or WUSI-TV's service areas and can receive KETC (channel 9, St. Louis) watch KETC instead. On the other hand, WUSI-TV has an advantage over Vincennes, Ind.'s WVUT-TV (both of which are in the Terre Haute, Indiana, market area) in that it has a stronger signal and can probably reach the majority of the market area more easily.
Most workers involved in these radio and television stations are students concurrently attending classes at the college. WSIU-TV and WUSI-TV also show BBC World News, a non-PBS program, at 5:00 a.m. Central Time (the same time as BBC America), Monday through Friday. When college is not in session during the fall and spring, BBC World News is also shown at 5:00 p.m. Central Time; when classes are in session, River Region Evening Edition, a student produced and run live newscast, replaces BBC World News from Monday through Thursday at 5:00 p.m.; repeats of another local program, WSIU InFocus, is shown on Friday at 5:00 p.m. Central Time.
The Post Production Supervisor at the station is Steve North. Mr. North works with many of the students at Southern Illinois University, that volunteer at his post production facility. If the volunteers prove themselves, they have the opportunity to move on to part-time status. Mr. North's workers have moved on to some of the most prestigious production houses, network affiliates, and national networks in the United States. The facility utilizes both linear and non-linear editing.
