The village is located on Leeds road. The village has a train station on the east coast main line that is served by Arriva Trains Northern offering services to Leeds, Wakefield, Doncaster and Sheffield. The area near the train station was once the site of lofthouse pit, that is sadly best rembered for the disaster that claimed the lives of several mineers. The area where the mine once stood is now a golf course and housing estate.
