The name Wikipedians choose for themselves is not set in stone. On request, Misplaced Pages developers can change user account settings and article histories such that all previous edits of a given user are attributed to the new name.

See m:Changing username for full details and instructions for developers.

To request attribution changes for individual edits of articles -- including changing attribution from an IP address to your username -- see Misplaced Pages:Changing attribution for an edit instead.

Older requests are Archived.

Procedure

The procedure for username change requests has changed. Please read the following instructions carefully and follow them exactly: developer time is precious and your request may not be completed if you don't.

  1. Create the new account, i.e. the username you want to change to.
  2. Edit this page as the old user. Add a request to the "New requests" section stating the old username and the new username you want. Sign it with ~~~~
  3. Log in as the new user. Edit the request you just made, to confirm that both accounts are you. Sign it again with ~~~~.
  4. If you are a sysop, please note this fact with your request so that the necessary changes can be made.
  5. Start editing from the new account. Once your request is dealt with, all edits from your old account will be reattributed to your new account.
  6. Be patient. It may take some months before a developer has time to attend to your request.

You will probably want to move and redirect your userpage and talk page after changing.

Requests for name change

This list is sorted by date, (ascending). Please put new requests IN THE CORRECT SECTION or they will be ignored!!

Fulfilled requests

  • I have already made the mistake of creating a new username. My first account is User:Jloisel and the new one I want to use is User:Jerome Loisel. If that is possible, I would like to see the history merged into the new account and the old account deleted. Or something like that. Thank you, and sorry about the problems. (Jloisel 20:10, 28 Jul 2004 (UTC))

    Edit from old account to prove who I am. If you do go through with this, by the way, please make sure my new changes history isn't deleted in the process. I would like to have the old data back, but the new data seems more important at this point. Thanks a bunch. {Jloisel 18:24, 5 Sep 2004 (UTC)}
Edit from new account to prove I own both of them. (Jerome Loisel 18:26, 5 Sep 2004 (UTC))

Pending requests

  • I made a name change request a long time ago, but received no reply. If fulfilling the request ends up losing my user history, that's fine -- I just want to be sure to get my old name back. I would like my username changed from user:Mr. Treesong to just user:Treesong. The username user:Treesong is my old account, but I couldn't log in to it because I switched email addresses and lost my password. If this can't be done, please give me a reply saying so. To prove that it's really me, I can tell you the two or three old emails that it may have been registered under: wayfarer@siu.edu; treesong@redrival.com or .net; treesong@rawfoods.com. 21:54, 3 Apr 2004 (UTC)
  • I'm in the same situation as Renamer/Dissident: asking for a merger of histories. I created a new username after Ed Poor asked, and I now have history under both my old username (I am Jack's username) and my current username (Jeandré). If there are no objections to the acute in my real name, please merge their histories; but deleting the I am Jack's username user page and its talk page before the merge, so as to not overwrite the ones of my current user page and its talk page. Thanks.
  • Please change my user name from from "René Gass" to "René Gaß" in the German Misplaced Pages, thank you!

I confirm the request of changing my Username from Urbanus to Thomas Luft on en, de and meta (I did create the new username on all three wikipedias). Do I have to do anything special to keep my sysop status in :de?--Thomas Luft 22:15, 21 Nov 2004 (UTC)
  • Please change my username from User:Hydrotaphia, which is a typo, to User:Hydriotaphia. Thanks very much indeed.Hydrotaphia 00:21, 10 Aug 2004 (UTC)
    • Update: I wasn't aware that I had to create the new username myself. I have now done so, and I hereby confirm my request for a username change. Thank you. Hydriotaphia 01:19, 25 Oct 2004 (UTC)
  • If possible, could I have my username changed to User:Indophile? I'm afraid I've already registered this username. However, as yet, no edits at all have been made to or from it, as I was reluctant to lose the contribution history of my current username. --Phil R 06:32, 12 Aug 2004 (UTC)

  • I signed up twice, by error: Once as JoWi and once as Jowi. Now I wish Jowi to be deleted and the edits I made using user Jowi renamed to JoWi ... but JoWi already exists! :( Anything you can do about this? Thanx, 149.225.216.120 12:38, 14 Aug 2004 (UTC)
  • I signed up not realizing that the initial character of my username User:Jolson would be turned into a capital. It therefore didn't turn out like the computer username I wanted it to. I therefore would like to use User:Jonas Olson instead. It would be a good thing having my contributions transferred to a new account name and I think it would be nice to tidy things up by not leaving the old one around but turning it into User:Jonas Olson. Perhaps someone else want to use the old one too. Thank you.
  • Please change username pgdudda to Yarram. Maintaining identity continuity would be nice, but is not required. Thanks! pgdudda 13:26, 19 Aug 2004 (UTC)
  • Please change my username from User:ntate_sw to User:eric_sw. Sorry, I didn't think long enough before choosing. Ntate is my chat name, for Misplaced Pages I'd like to use my real name. Thank you!
    • The account ntate sw does not exist. Please log in before making your request. Angela. 19:36, Aug 23, 2004 (UTC)
  • I will be pleased if you can remove my user account Kfl or tell how to do it.
    • Accounts can't be removed. Is there any particular reason you require it? — Kate Turner | Talk 23:33, 2004 Oct 13 (UTC)

  • (German Misplaced Pages): I made an account with username tinloaf, but then I was a little confused and logged out without giving my email-adress. Unfortunatlely I made a spelling mistake at my password, so I cannot login anymore. I made a second account tinl0af, could you change tinl0af to tinloaf? In your logs you can see that there are logins to both accounts with the same IP. Thanks!
  • I had made a 2nd account Umibôzu on fr: because i didn't want to use my sysop account Ryo. Now i'd like to have my edits under that secondary account assigned to Ryo, if possible :) (i'll live without if impossible, of course ^_-). As I didn't create any Umibôzu account here, here's the confirmation link on fr: Ryo 22:00, 17 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Request for password-/email-change

  • Hello, I wanted to register User:Crux, but it said "The user name you entered is already in use." Both the discussion page, the user page and are empty. Is it possible to set a new password or e-mail-adress, that I can use that account? BTW: I'm Crux at de: --145.254.142.67 22:37, 14 Aug 2004 (UTC)

  • I have the same problem with User:Shii. Again, the discussion page, the user page and the contributions are blank. Ashiibaka tlk 01:38, 14 Nov 2004 (UTC)

please change my username from seejay to jameshospedales. thanks --Seejay 21:39, 26 Aug 2004 (UTC)

I just attempted to register User:Davidgro, but I got an error page as soon as I submitted the form, it was plain blank-and-white and it said

"Sorry- we have a problem... The wikimedia web server didn't return any response to your request. To get information on what's going on you can visit #wikipedia. An "offsite" status page is hosted on OpenFacts."

When I reloaded the page I was returned to the log-in/create page and it had an error displayed that said "The user name you entered is already in use. Please choose a different name." so I tried to log in and it gave me a password error, attempting to mail a password displayed two errors (and two forms!) 'There is no e-mail address recorded for user "Davidgro".' and 'Error sending mail:'. I checked in case someone else took my name first (it's not common) and the user page, the user talk page, and Contributions by Davidgro (like Crux did above) are all empty.

If that account's creation date is today, then it means it was half-registed when I tried to, and if possible I'd like to have a password, and an e-mail address of davidgro at gmail dot com set on that account. Please let me know if that account really was pre-existing, so I know to register a real one for myself. --67.160.78.183 06:43, 30 Aug 2004 (UTC)

  • I registered with the username User:Conti here sometimes in 2003, but I had some log-in problems because of my browser and managed to change my password, but I actually don't know to what I changed it anymore. The user has no contributions, so if it would be possible, could you send me the password or change the email-adress for User:Conti to the one I use? And if this is possible, I'd like to have my username changed to Conti, then. :-) --Conti| 12:58, Oct 1, 2004 (UTC)
  • I wanted to register User:Gerrit but it's already in use. However, the user has made no edits and has no user page. Is it possible to "take over" the username? I'm currently User:Gerritholl on this wiki and User:Gerrit on many other wiki's. The same holds for . Something similar is true for , although this one has made some minor edits one year ago. I wonder what possibilities there are: I would really like to use the username User:Gerrit on all wiki's, especially because of the upcoming single login feature. • Hallo I'am a german user. My name is Morgaine|Benutzer:Morgaine. Please send a new password to the e-mailaddress "laferela@hotmail.com", because my old e-mailaddress isn't valid anymore and I forgot my old passwort. Therefor I cannot log in at the moment. When this is not possible, than I will have to register again. That would be bad, because I have already authored some articles under this name. thx ( Morgaine ) --213.168.104.39 18:18, 11 Nov 2004 (UTC) (
