Galatasaray Spor Kulübü (Galatasaray Sports Club, or Galatasaray SK) is a Turkish sports club based in İstanbul which is most famous for its football section. Founded in 1905 by Ali Sami Yen and his fellows from the prestigious Galatasaray High School, Galatasaray currently has 16 Turkish league championships, and also won the UEFA Cup and UEFA Super Cup in 2000 to become European Champions. Galatasaray also topped the world club ranking to be named "Best Football Club in the World" in January of 2001.
Galatasaray is one of only two teams to have won the UEFA Cup without being beaten in a single match, and is also notable for being the first team to win the competition after having been knocked out of the Champions League. In winning the UEFA Cup during the 1999/2000 season, beating Arsenal of England on penalties, Galatasaray became the first Turkish football club ever to win a European trophy. Galatasaray also holds the world record of most games won in a row at home (24 games in a row: 13 May 2001 - 8 December 2002). Galatasaray is the most known team in Turkey abroad with fan shops all over the world.
The club's ground, Ali Sami Yen Stadyumu, reopened for the 2004-05 season, and a massive renovation project of one of its stands was completed in the 5th week of the 2005-2006 season. Galatasaray clinched their 16th League title after they beat Kayserispor 3-0 as Fenerbahce SK were held to a draw.
Former player and current assistant coach Erdal Keser will be the new Galatasaray coach after the 2006-2007 season.
History
Galatasaray were founded on Autumn 1905 by fifh grade Galatasaray Lycee students as a football club. Galatasaray's first president was Ali Sami Yen. Their first match was against Kadikoy Faure School and they won this match 2-0 . There were discussions about club's name, some suggested Gloria (victory) and others Audace (courage) but it's named as Galatasaray. According to researcher Cem Atabeyoğlu, Galatasaray took its name in their first much. In that match Galatasaray won 2-0 over Rûm club and spectator call them "Galata Sarayı efendileri" (English: Gentleman of Palace Galatasaray), after this event adopted that name and started to call their club "Galata Sarayı". In 1905 in the Ottoman Empire era, there weren't any laws for associations so the club couldn't registered offically. After 1912 Law of Association, the club registered legally .
Rivalry With English Clubs
Galatasaray have a notorius fan base for their less than welcoming atmosphere to visiting supporters. Fans often display banners displaying "Welcome To Hell" in european ties when both the opposition fans and team arrive in the city. fans, Christopher Loftus and Kevin Speight, were brutally stabbed in Istanbul. The Turkish FA allowed the game to go ahead that night, Galatasaray won 2-0. The return leg in Leeds had the most charged, emotional yet poisonous atmosphere. Outside the ground saw running battles between police and fans and there were attacks on Turkish TV crews, the game saw Harry Kewell sent off and a 2-2 score was enough for Galatasaray, as they went through to the final. It is down to these events that the rivalry between turkish and english clubs exist. Violence also occured between Galatasaray and Arsenal fans before the Final in Copenhagen and there has been no love lost between the two nationalities in both domestic team and international team meetings since. Stadium
Galatasaray is planning to build a new stadium in another quarter of Istanbul, Seyrantepe, whose name was changed to Aslantepe ("Lion Hill"), after Galatasaray bought the ground. The idea is to realize a stadium on the model of the ArenA in Amsterdam, and complete it in 16 months. The building of the new stadium will start January 2007. The new stadium will have a capacity of 52,500 making it the biggest stadium in Turkey, owned by a club. It will also feature a moving ground and a hydraulic dome at the top that can close in case of rain or snow . There are also plans for shopping mall and residential units construction in the Aslantepe Project.
