David Sean "Dave" Anthony (born August 26, 1967) is an American comedian, actor, screenwriter, and podcaster.
Career
Anthony is best known in recent years for the comedy podcast The Dollop, which he co-hosts with comedian Gareth Reynolds, which presents an event or person, usually from American history, selected for its humorousness or peculiarity.
He was also the creator, producer, and editor of Walking the Room, a podcast that he co-hosted with comedian Greg Behrendt from 2010 to 2014. They hosted a show together on the Comedy World Radio Network in 2001 and collaborated again on The Greg Behrendt Show in 2006–2007. Anthony regularly appears as a guest on various other podcasts, including FOFOP where he has been given the endearing name of "Guest Charlie Number One".
Anthony has had numerous roles in television, films, and commercials, and has been a guest on various late night shows including Jimmy Kimmel Live and The Late Late Show. He has acted in various television programs including The Office, Arrested Development, Maron, Hello Ladies, Boston Legal and Entourage. He was a contributing writer for SuicideGirls and the Comedy Film Nerds websites, and had a blog called Stop All Monsters. He has performed stand-up all over the world and frequently performs around Southern California. He is also currently a writer, most recently on AMC's Talking Dead and on Maron, for which he was nominated for a WGA Award in 2015.
Personal life
Anthony was raised near San Francisco, California, and is open about his childhood growing up with a neglectful, alcoholic father and a mother who was raised by alcoholics and was emotionally unavailable. He cites his neglected childhood as the source of his mental health and anger problems, and based his 2015 comedy tour Hot Head around this topic. Anthony has also lived in New York City, but currently resides in Los Angeles, California with his wife, who is a psychologist, and their son.
Social Media
Anthony is an active twitter and facebook user and has engaged in heated debates. He has a reputation for blocking many people for "blockable offences", such as telling comedians they're not funny, being an idiot, being stupid, and not understanding the subject of the argument. He is often asked by blocked users to be unblocked, but he refuses to do so because he feels that they would have been blocked for good reason.
Plagiarism allegations
On July 9, 2015, Alan Bellows of the history website and podcast Damn Interesting posted an open letter titled "A Special Note to the Writers at The Dollop", accusing The Dollop, an American history comedy podcast written and co-hosted by Anthony, of repeatedly plagiarizing Damn Interesting's original content as well as content from other websites. Bellows classified Anthony's usage as plagiarism because the works were read mostly verbatim without permission or attribution. The letter included 2,670 words of examples of plagiarized writings and a link to further examples.
Jonathan Bailey of Plagiarism Today reported on the incident, concluding, "While there's room for homage and parody, this was a case of neither. This was as podcast using third party created work as a jumping off point for their jokes and giving no attribution back. I'm glad that they are fixing the issue, but to say it isn't a plagiarism issue is, in my eyes, a tremendous stretch." The Dollop subsequently deleted the offending episodes from their website and established a separate website to cite their sources in the future.
