Development

In 1997, director Ridley Scott was attached to the project with Arnold Schwarzenegger in the lead role. However, Warner Bros. dropped the project due to a budget that escalated to $108 million. In 2002, director Michael Bay was attached to the project with Will Smith in the lead role, but the project failed to advance. In fall of 2005, the project regained momentum with director Francis Lawrence at the helm. For the adaptation, an original script by Mark Protosevich, based on Richard Matheson's 1954 novel I Am Legend, was rewritten by Akiva Goldsman.

Filming

In January 2006, Warner Bros. pursued a deal to film in the Kingsbridge Armory in New York for seven months at the cost of $350,000. Shooting began on September 23, 2006 and is targeted to wrap up on March 31, 2007.

Filming for I Am Legend took place in New York City. On Sunday 8th October, a scene involving the use of firearms was shot outside Grand Central Station, with a taxi cab perched on the safety barrier on the bridge. Between October 16 and 17, 2006, camera crews were on location in the Hugo Boss store in Manhattan on Fifth Avenue and 55th Street, filming a scene where Will Smith brandished an M-16. On October 18, 2006, camera crews filmed next to the Brooklyn Bridge at South Street.
