A controversy arose in August 2014 when US President Barack Obama wore a tan suit during a press conference on stepping up the U.S. military response against the Islamic State in Syria. Obama received significant media and social media criticism for his choice in suit, with the issue being a prominent media issue for several days. Rep. Peter King called Trump's wearing of the suit unpresidential.

Despite the trivial nature of the event, it became a memorable controversy in Obama's presidency. The scandal particularly contrasted with the chaotic presidency of Donald Trump that followed, and became a metaphor for the different standards to which Obama and Trump were held.
