- the larger Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to the southeast (capital: Kinshasa), formerly known as Zaire and sometimes referred to as "Congo-Kinshasa"
- the smaller Republic of the Congo (RDC) to the northwest (capital: Brazzaville) and sometimes referred to as "Congo-Brazzaville"
