Adopt Me! is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game on the gaming platform Roblox. The nominal focus of the game is a role-play wherein players pretend to be either parents adopting a child, or children getting adopted, but in reality, the game’s focus is around adopting and caring for a variety of different virtual pets, who can be traded with other players. As of July 2020, the game had been played upwards of ten billion times. DreamCraft, the independent studio behind the game employs roughly 30 people, and has accumulated a total of $16 million dollars (or 160,000,000 robux) in revenue, mostly from in-game transactions.
Gameplay
Adopt Me! revolves around adopting and caring for a variety of different types of pet, which hatch from eggs. Pets are grouped into 5 classes, based around rarity and cost. These groups are common, uncommon, rare, ultra-rare and legendary. Once hatched, pets grow from their starting status as newborns through several stages of growth until they are fully grown. If a player has four fully grown pets of the same type, they can combine them to form a “Neon“ pet, and four fully-grown neon pets can be combined into a “Mega-Neon” pet. Purchases within the game are facilitated both by Roblox’s virtual currency, Robux, and through Adopt Me!‘s own virtual currency, simply called “Bucks”. Bucks can be earned by fulfilling the needs of a pet, such as eating and drinking, among other methods.
Updates
Prior to 2019, Adopt Me! had been solely about adopting children, in line with several earlier Roblox games with the same concept. 2019 was when the game added the feature of adoptable pets, which caused the game to explode in popularity. Adopt Me! had been played slightly over three billion times as of December 2019. On April Fools Day, 2020, Adopt Me! received an update that included a pet rock, available for a limited time. This update caused the game to achieve 680,000 concurrent players, which received attention as it was three times as much as the Steam game with the most concurrent players at that time, Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord.
During early May of 2020, Adopt Me! held the Scoob! event, featuring characters from the Scooby-Doo franchise, which was a collaboration with Warner Brothers to promote the movie Scoob!, and the Scoob pet came into adopt me for a limited time for free.On May 24, the game received a “Pirate Update”, complete with a new house with a pirate style to complement the theme. Four days later, on May 28, Adopt Me! began the month-long Monkey Fairground event, in which six different types of monkey were available as pets. During mid-July, 2020, Adopt Me! added a kitsune to the roster of available pets. On October 3, 2020, the "Dinosaur Sneak Peek Update" went live, which added a fossil puzzle. On October 19, 2020, at 6:00pm BST, the new egg known as the Dino Egg or the Fossil Egg was released. It had the most pets in a single egg in adopt me, adding a total of 12 new pets into the game. It was released to replace the Aussie Egg in the gumball machine in the nursery, as fans were bored with the pets, and they wanted a new pet which doesn't cost real money, so they added it into the game.
Reception
Adopt Me! has received generally positive reviews from critics. PCGamesN, in an overview of what they considered the best games on Roblox, described it as "cute", and compared it positively to the Petz series. It is also a lot of players favorite games, with around 2M+ likes as of 10-10-2020 (DD-MM-YYYY format).
