Usage

Using this template is pretty easy. Just insert this text into the External links section of a video game article:

{{WoS game|id=<id>|name=<game title>}}

and replace <id> with the unique ID given to each game. You can find the IDs by looking at the URL given by the "Vote" button. Grab the ID from the URL after "http://www.worldofspectrum.org/infoseekscore.cgi?id=". For example, if the World of Spectrum URL is:

http://www.worldofspectrum.org/infoseek.cgi?regexp=^Exolon$&pub=^Hewson+Consultants+Ltd$&model=spectrum

the vote URL is:

http://www.worldofspectrum.org/infoseekscore.cgi?id=0001686

then just "0001686" (without the double quotes) would replace <id>.

For <game title> insert the name of the game (the default is to use the pagename). For example:

{{WoS game|id=0001686|name=Exolon}}

would give you this:

Exolon at SpectrumComputing.co.uk

Only use this this template for game related articles, i.e. not for publishers or individuals.

WoS IDs

It may be worth noting that each game at WoS has a unique ID, which may make linking to it much easier than the fulltext currently used in searches. You can find the IDs by looking at the info page on WoS, then clicking on the "Vote" button. Grab the ID from the URL, then use <http://www.worldofspectrum.org/infoseekid.cgi?id=whatever> eg http://www.worldofspectrum.org/infoseekid.cgi?id=0002259 for Head over Heels. Alternatively, I can provide the full list of WoS IDs to Misplaced Pages article mappings, as I created that just before Christmas for WoS :-) Cheers --Pak21 22:24, 30 December 2006 (UTC)

I was not aware of that. I created the template and before announcing it or start applying it myself, it has already been applied to the s....apparently...by three annonymous contributors.
How do you suggest such an mapping can be used? A 'bot? Or can a template handle that by itself?
--Frodet 23:59, 30 December 2006 (UTC)
I think a bot would be the easiest way to handle all this, yes (modulo my copyright comments below), not that I really know much about bots on Misplaced Pages. Cheers --Pak21 15:52, 31 December 2006 (UTC)
I think that a Misplaced Pages -> Wos ID mapping would be good idea now. There are a lot of articles already using the template, and after my last update they don't work so I have to update them. Also nice as a reference for future articles. --Frodet 20:27, 31 December 2006 (UTC)

Publishers

Can I suggest that this template is not used for publishers/authors etc on WoS, at least in its current form? It currently links to infoseek.cgi, not infoseekpub.cgi, which would be what is needed for publishers? Cheers --Pak21 15:38, 31 December 2006 (UTC)

Again, you are correct. I have updated the usage accordingly. --Frodet 15:50, 31 December 2006 (UTC)

How about a en:Template:WoS pub (backlinks edit) for the publishers? --WOSlinker 16:09, 31 December 2006 (UTC)

I have created this one. Could somebody please sanity check this one before it becomes too widely used...? --Frodet 20:49, 31 December 2006 (UTC)
Looks ok, I've changed over the 8 links I modified previously to use the WoS_game template to use the WoS_pub template now. --WOSlinker 21:02, 31 December 2006 (UTC)

Where Used

The following link can be used to show which pages use ths WoS_Game template: Special:Whatlinkshere/Template:WoS_game —The preceding unsigned comment was added by WOSlinker (talkcontribs) 20:11, 31 December 2006 (UTC).

Possible copyright problems

As noted at Misplaced Pages:Copyrights#Linking to copyrighted works, we should not be linking to pages which distribute works in violation of copyright. Unfortunately, this is what World of Spectrum does (in most cases, anyway). I think we may need to obtain some more advice on whether links to WoS are a good idea or not. Cheers --Pak21 15:45, 31 December 2006 (UTC)

I'm not sure I agree. While most (all?) of the contents on WoS is copyrighted, surely, most of the software where the copyright owner does not allow for re-distribution (e.g. Activision) has actually been removed from download and is not in violation.? --Frodet 15:59, 31 December 2006 (UTC)
No. WoS's policy is that games are available unless the copyright holder has explicitly requested that they not be distributed. As such, the vast majority of the content on there is formally in violation of copyright. Cheers --Pak21 16:07, 31 December 2006 (UTC)
Sorry, I should have added activly somewhere in there. :) However, I do understand your point. But this isn't really a problem with the template until we actually start mass-linking games to the WoS archive (through a bot). Any links can still be made today; the template just facilitates the process. Besides, this is another place where potential copyright owners can discover their work, and either allow or disalow the title in question. --Frodet 18:57, 31 December 2006 (UTC)
