It was a part of the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971 fought in the Thar Desert of Rajasthan state in India.

In addition to the Hawkers, a single battalion of the Indian Army held 2,000 Pakistani troops and 2 Pakistani patton-tank brigades at bay until dawn. Hawker Hunters could only fly during the day, they had absolutely no night-radar capability. The Pakistanis knews this, which is why they attacked Longewala at night. The Indian battalion consisting of 160 infantry soldiers and two anti-tank vehicles checked the numerically superior Pakistani force until the Hunters were able to complete the sortie.
