Do not "fix" links to redirects that are not broken

Please read and follow WP:ENGVAR before making edits like this. The article has used the American English "Aluminum" since 2007, and has never used the British English "Aluminium". In addition, you only changed it in one place, making it so that the article uses "Aluminum" in three places and "Aluminium" in one place. --Guy Macon (talk) 06:22, 4 March 2014 (UTC)

You continue to make edits like this one that violate Misplaced Pages's editing guideline at

Misplaced Pages:Redirect#Do not "fix" links to redirects that are not broken.

Misplaced Pages editing guidelines are generally accepted standards that editors should attempt to follow. There are good reasons for our guidelines.

In particular, you changed ], to ] and ] to ]s.

Changing financial markets to financial markets looks strange with only part of the word marked as a link. It increases the chances of the link not working, because some editors will inadvertently click on the final "s".

It also interferes with any editor who cuts and pastes "financial markets" from the article and searches for it in the source code.

It also interferes with search and replace, which is commonly used to make sure that the same word isn't spelled differently in different places in the article.

Changing ], to ] is harmful for at least three reasons.

First, even though bank deposits currently redirects to Deposit account, they are not the same thing. A deposit account is a place where a bank deposit goes. It is not, itself, a bank deposit. So what happens if some future editor, in response to future changes to the banking system, replaces the redirect with an article about bank deposits and creates a new page about savings & loan deposits? The way the link was before you "fixed" it, it would have gone to the right page. The way the link was after you "fixed" it, it would have gone to the wrong page. Whether or not such a change is plausible in this particular case, you have "fixed" well over a thousand links so far this year.

Second, non-piped links make the source code easier to read and make better use of the "what links here" tool, making it easier to track how articles are linked and helping with large-scale changes to links.

Third, when you "fix" a link, you may be hiding the fact that the article needs to be moved rather than the redirect changed. You are destroying useful information which can be used to help decide on the best article title.

Finally, "fixing" links to redirects that are not broken wastes your time doing something that has zero benefit to anyone, and is sometimes harmful. The fact that you also make a lot of edits that are beneficial tells me that if you stopped wasting your time making useless edits you would have more time to make useful ones. The fact that you also make a lot of edits that are beneficial also makes it hard to clean up after you. If they were all bad we could roll them all back at once. Instead we have to check each edit individually.

Please stop. At the very least, please discuss your actions instead of ignoring warnings placed on your talk page. --Guy Macon (talk) 11:03, 4 March 2014 (UTC)

Please don't "fix" redirects

I can see this already called out a couple times on this talk page, but to make the point again: while I understand the desire to change a wikilink that goes to a redirect page into a wikilink that goes right to the page the redirect points to, it is actually not only unneeded, but can interfere with maintaining things in the future.
